Can't edit one employee in employee center

I'm using QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2019 with Windows 10. In one of the businesses that I do, I have one employee who I'm unable to edit her information. If I click on the name, QuickBooks freezes and I have to close the program.

 

I don't have problems with any of the other employees in that business. And I'm still able to create paychecks for that employee. I've used the Quickbooks hub tool to see if that would fix my issue but it didn't. Maybe at this point, I would be better off to start the employee as a new employee. I'm hesitant to do that though. I'm open to any suggestions.

Hello, all.

 

Allow me to provide an update on the Employee Center freezing issue.

 

Our Engineering team has worked with Microsoft to resolve this issue. The update was released on April 21st, and it helps repair the Windows 10 versions 1809, 1903, and 1909. To check your Windows 10 version, you can follow these steps :

 

  1. Go to the Start menu and type About your PC.
  2. Select About your PC, then scroll down to find your version number (view screenshot below).

You'll also want to install the new Microsoft update on your computer. The steps below will show you how:

 

  1. Navigate to the Start menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update and click Check for Updates.
  3. Follow the onscreen steps to install the latest cumulative update.
  4. Verify the update is installed by pressing View Update History from the update window.

Thanks for reaching out to Community. I'm happy to assist you with your QuickBooks freezing.

 

At this time, this is a known issue. We currently have an investigation open, INV-24741. I recommend contacting support to be added to the list of affected users. This way, you can receive email updates about the concern. 

 

But great news, we do have a workaround to get you back up and running smoothly. All you need to do is export your employee list via IIF and import it back into the File; This will merge the employee's list, clearing out the damage that causes the freeze in the program. 

 

To export the list: 

  1. Sign in to your company file as an admin.
  2. Go to the File menu and select Switch to Single-user Mode.
  3. Go back to the File menu and select Utilities then Export. Select Export IIF Files.
  4. Choose Employee List, then click OK.
  5. From the Save in the drop-down, select the location you want to save the IIF. For example, your Windows desktop.
  6. Enter a name in the File name field and select Save.
  7. Select OK.

To import list: 

  1. Sign in to your company file as an admin.
  2. Go to File and select Switch to Single-user Mode.
  3. Make a backup of your company file. This way, you can restore it if the data doesn't import the way you expected.
  4. Go to the File menu and choose Utilities then Import. Click Import IIF Files.
  5. Browse to your IIF file. Select it and then select Open.
  6. Hit OK to confirm your data was imported.

I'm very sorry to hear that you had that experience.  This is definitely not something we want our customers to have to go through.  We want to get you up and running, not the opposite.  Did the issue get resolved?

NO IT HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED.. I HAVE SEEN OTHER POST WHERE QB USERS ARE HAVING THE

SAME PROBLEM.

Thank you for letting me know, @Jake2020.  I've done some digging into this and I do see that the INV referred to by one of my colleagues - INV-24741 - is still under investigation.  In the meantime, have you tried the workaround posted earlier?

 

To export the list: 

  1. Sign in to your company file as an admin.

THAT WAS TRIED ON 2-26-2020  FROM ONE OF THE TECH SUPPORT, AND WAS NOT DONE 

CORRECTLY, CAUSING HIM TO DAMAGE OUR CO FILE..  SO IM NOT REAL COMFORTABLE \

WITH TRYING IT AGAIN.. IT CAUSED HUGE PROBLEMS FOR US.

I'm sorry to hear that, @Jake2020.  Since it didn't work the first time, I completely understand your reluctance to try it again.  That is the only workaround we have, at this time.  Engineers are still engaged on coming up with a solution, so as long as you were added to that investigation you will be notified once the issue is resolved.

@Jake2020, your best bet would be to contact support and have one of the agents verify that you have been added to the investigation.  We don't have access to your account information in community so I wouldn't be able to look that up for you.

I am having the same problem.  Thought it was the copputer then moved QuickBooks to a new computer same problem.  It started about 1 1/2 weeks ago.

This does not work for me.  When I go to import, I get the attached error message and can't "Review now" because the IIF can only be opened by QBs.  This is crazy!

Thank you for trying the workaround suggested by Tori. I can see that the Employee list has failed to import due to the ongoing issue. At the moment, the best thing you can do is get in touch with our Support team to be added to the list of affected users. That way, you will get an update when the issue is fixed.

 

If you have other concerns at the moment, feel free to go back to this thread.

I just attempted the solution and received an error file that I cannot open to see which 11 employees are impacted.

Welcome to this conversation, @CMJ CPA. Thanks for trying the workaround provided by my peer @Tori B to resolve the issue. 

 

Since you received an error, let's run the Verify Data tool to identify the issues within your company file, then Rebuild it to self-resolve what the Verify Data finds and notify you of anything that may need to be manually fixed. 

 

To Verify:

  1. Click File at the top menu.
  2. Go to Utilities then select Verify.

 

To Rebuild:

  1. Click File at the top menu.
  2. Go to Utilities then select Rebuild.

 

Once done, follow the steps to export and import the employees' list via IIF. 

 

For your reference, read through this help article: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file. It has the basic steps in using the Rebuild Data tool as well as using the file doctor.

Can't edit one employee in employee center

Since this is definitely not something they want their customers to have to go through they will usually give you free service for up to 2 years.  It is there way to making for the mess they caused and the fact that the software they charge so much for does not work.  This is so nice of them.
