I was at a client today who is on quickbooks desktop 2017 trying to create the NC W2 file to efile.  They did not have excel loaded on the laptop so they downloaded Microsoft  Excel 365.  I then went to quickbooks to initiate the creation of the file.  It got to where it needed to create the excel spreadsheet to display the payroll data and hung.  Is there a known problem with Microsoft Excel 365 that causes it not to complete the creation of the W2 file for online state filing?

Good day, dmcsbb.

So far, there isn't any similar reported issues with Microsoft Excel 365 when exporting reports from QuickBooks Desktop.

In the meantime, you'll want to update QuickBooks to its latest release version and export the report once more.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu and select Update QuickBooks.
  2. Choose the Options tab.
  3. Click the Mark All button, then Save.
  4. Click Update Now.
  5. Check the Reset Update box, then click Get Updates.

If the same problem occurs, try to repair the software. This can fix any program-related issues or errors. Before doing so, make sure to save a back up copy of your company file.

Then, follow the steps below to repair QuickBooks:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Back up your QuickBooks company file.
  3. Go to Start and then Control Panel.
  4. Select Programs and Features
  5. In the list of programs, select QuickBooks.
  6. Choose Uninstall/Change, then click Continue and Next.
  7. Click Repair and then Next. Wait for it to complete.
  8. Once done, hit Finish.
