Hello. I am trying to separate my salaried employee wages and my hourly employee wages in my profit and loss. How do I make them separate expense accounts?

Hi there, @sarah74.

Let's go to your Payroll Settings to make the employees' salary and hourly wages posted to a separate expense account. Let me show you how:

  1. At the top right, select the Gear icon.
  2. Click Payroll Settings
  3. Under Preferences, select the Accounting link.
  4. Go to the Wage Expense Accounts section.
  5. Find and select the I use different accounts for different wages radio button.
  6. From the Salary and Regular Pay drop-downs, select a different expense account for each item.
  7. Scroll down and click OK
  8. In the Want to update existing transactions, too? section, enter an effective date.
  9. Hit Update then the OK button.

I've also added some articles you can use about ways to edit, save, and send the report. Also, a list of payroll reports available in QuickBooks:

I went through the steps, select each emploee's wages are posted to different types of accounts.  Then select continue, but quickbooks doesn't "continue".  Click the help button at top, nothing happens, I can change radio buttons, back button, reimbursments pull-down...they all work, except the most important button..."continue".  Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to this conversation, @bbrry. I'm here to help you get past this issue.

Since all buttons are working except for the Continue button, I'd suggest you log out and log back in to your QuickBooks account. This is to make sure that we remove some unusual behavior.

If the same thing happens, I'd suggest we use the incognito or a private window to verify browser-related issues. QuickBooks Online uses cache and cookies to load faster. However, these can also block pages from loading when it's already full.

Here's how to open your QuickBooks in a private or incognito window:

  • Mozilla/ Internet Explorer: Press CTRL Shift P
  • Safari: Press Command Shift N
  • Google Chrome: Press CTRL Shift N

If it works, you can go back to your original browser and clear the cache. Alternatively, you can use other compatible browsers.

Let me know if you have additional questions. We're always delighted to help you more.
