Hey, @nwood888

I've got you covered. The good news is, you’ve reached the right place, and I have the tools to help. It's a very easy process. Follow the steps below.

  1. Go to the Taxes tab.
  2. Select Payroll Taxes
  3. Locate the tax payment that says Resolve Overpayment
  4. Press Resolve Overpayment

It's a piece of cake! If you have any trouble along the way, you can check out this link about resolving a tax overpayment

Remember, I'm only a post away if you need me. I'm always here to lend a helping hand. Have a great day!

Thank you so much for the reply!

Unfortunately, I don't see the "resolve overpayment" button anywhere. On my "Payroll Tax Center" screen, I just see the "Pay Taxes" button, the forms on the right and the "You may also want to:" links.

Also, you can see the overpayment under the Tax Owed column with the negative amount:

  1. Go to the Reports tab.
  2. Search for Payroll Tax Liability.
  3. Change the Date Range to the quarter of your reporting needs.
  4. Hit Run Report

After resolving the overpayment, we can now print your 940 tax form:

Ah, I finally found the issue! I had migrated from QuickBooks Desktop and it didn't bring over my paychecks, but it did bring over my tax payments for the full year. I'm missing paychecks from Jan - Jun 2019. Can you tell me how I can enter prior payrolls? I've looked at some articles online and they're pointing me toward buttons that don't exist in my Quickbooks.

Hey there, @nwood888. Happy to provide some insight here.

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Hit Help (?) at the top right.
  3. Click Contact Us to connect with a live support agent.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I'll be here to help. Have a wonderful day!

I'm not on the full service plan. Is there a way I can do this myself?

You can enter prior payroll data, nwood888.

If you've already entered the employees, follow these steps:

  1. Click Workers on the left pane to get to the Employees page.
  2. Select the employee to open the information, then Enter prior pay details.
  3. Enter the necessary information.

You'll want to check out this article to learn more: Set up a prior payroll.

Note that you can only do this if you haven't paid your employees yet in QuickBooks Online. If you did, our Payroll support team will be the one to enter it for you. You can follow the steps provided by my colleague above to reach them.

Stay in touch with me if you have additional concerns.

Yes, I've been to that page, but when I get to this step:

"In the employee's profile, an option to enter payroll history appears, select Enter 2018 prior pay details."

There is no option to enter payroll history / 2018 prior pay details.

Thanks for getting back to us, nwood888.

Let me share additional information on recording payroll history in QuickBooks Online. The ability to enter historical payroll is only available for the previous year and there are no paychecks created for the employee(s) yet.

You may consider checking out this article for more information: Set up a prior payroll.

If you've already created paychecks, I would recommend contacting our Payroll Support team. They have available resources to help you enter the information.

Here's how to contact them:

  1. Click the Help (question mark) icon at the top right.
  2. Select Contact Us at the bottom to connect with our live support.

Please let us know if you have any other payroll or QuickBooks related concerns. We're always here to help.
