How do I add a contractor's W2 info so I can give them a 1099 at the end of the year?

Hi Leonora!

It sounds like you're in the QuickBooks Online (QBO) platform since it's where we enter a contractor's information. I'll take this as a QBO question instead of QuickBooks Self-Employed.

You’ll want to ask your contractor to provide their W9 information instead, so you can enter it to QuickBooks for their 1099 form. Or, you can send them an invitation email to let them enter that information.

  1. Go to Workers and select Contractors.
  2. Choose the Add Contractor button if you haven’t added them yet.
  3. Enter their name and email.
  4. (Optional) Put a check mark in the Email this contractor… checkbox to let them enter their info.
  5. Click Add Contractor.

If the contractor was already added in the first place, and you opt to let them enter their info, just click the Send Email hypertext.

After setting up the contractor's profile, you can enter their transactions, then provide their 1099 form later on.

We're open 24/7, so hop in if you have questions in the future. We'll be happy to assist you further.

I actually am in the Self-Employed platform, but have a contractor helping me with project work.  Can I add her in Self-Employed or do I need to migrate to normal Quickbooks?

Yes, you need to switch to QuickBooks Online since you need to provide 1099s, leonora.

At the moment, the QBSE version only calculates estimated taxes and helps prepare your Schedule C. Check out these comparison charts between the programs:

Let me also share this guide on how you can upgrade to QBO: Switch from QuickBooks Self-Employed to QuickBooks Online.

After switching, follow these steps on how you can add the contractor's info in QBO:

  1. Go to the Workers menu and select Contractor.
  2. Click Add a contractor, then enter all required details.
