Thanks for reaching out to the Community, @sgriff3750.

In QuickBooks Online (QBO), you can adjust the employee's profile to be exempt from SUI. However, for those employees exempt from SUI, they must pay FUTA at the full rate.

To exempt employee from SUI, here's what you'll need to do:

  1. In the left menu, click Workers or Payroll.
  2. Go to the Employees tab.
  3. Choose an employee, then click to open the profile.
  4. In the Pay section, tap the Pencil icon.
  5. Hit the Pencil icon under What are Employee's withholdings?.
  6. In the Tax exemptions section, put a checkmark in the SUI box.
  7. Click Done twice.

Check out this article for more information: Adjust employee exemption taxes.

The last two steps don't exist in the online version.  And the employee is exempt from FUTA and SUI so it only failed to deal with part of the problem and missed the other.

Thanks for getting back to us, sgriff3750.

In the same What are employee's withholdings? page, you'll have to scroll-down to see the Tax exemptions mentioned by MiriamM.

Meanwhile, cache might have contributed on this unexpected result that we have right now. Though it helps your browser or device's background processes run smoothly, this can also cause unexpected issues when piled up. Here's how to get rid of any cache-related concerns:

  1. Open a private browser and log in to your account. It uses but doesn't store cache.
  2. If they can see the Tax exemptions option successfully, we can go back to your regular browser and clear the cache.
  3. Other supported browsers are good alternatives, too. Each of them uses a different cache.

If the same thing happens, I'd recommend contacting our Payroll Support Team. They can review the details provide you additional steps to get this working. You can reach them using this link: Contact Payroll Support.
