Transitioning from Intuit Online Payroll to QB Online Payroll if using QB Desktop for all other non-payroll items

We were notified that as of 5/1/21, Intuit Online Payroll would no longer be available and we were offered QB Online Payroll.  I "cut the cord" so to speak with Intuit Online Payroll on 4/30/21 and checked the box to move over to QB Online Payroll.  But I have NO idea how to access that now.

Now I'm wondering, do you have to be using QB Online vs. QB Desktop to use QB Online payroll?  Or may we use QB Online Payroll (like we did Intuit Online Payroll) and export information to our QB Desktop?  We do not want to use QB Online for anything other than Payroll at this time.  I tried calling QB support but that's not available until Monday, 5/3.  Thank you in advance for any help!

Transitioning from Intuit Online Payroll to QB Online Payroll if using QB Desktop for all other non-payroll items

Hi there, @nberning.

Let me give you some information and options about transitioning from Intuit Online Payroll (IOP) to QuickBooks Online Payroll (QBOP).

You have two options to continue to use your payroll account.

Option 1:

If you already have a QBOP account, I'd recommend continuing to use the standalone. Let's try to login into QuickBooks to verify if you now have an account since you've checked the box to move over to QBO Payroll.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the QuickBooks login page.
  2. Enter your IOP credentials in the box.
  3. Tap Sign in

You may visit this page for more details about payroll transition: Move from Intuit Online Payroll to QuickBooks Online Payroll Core.

Option 2

If you don't have a QBOP account yet, you have an alternative to subscribing to QuickBooks Desktop Payroll (QBDT). Then export your IOP data to your new account. This way, your accounting and payroll data are united in one program.

To start, let's purchase a payroll account first, then activate it. After that, you can now set up the Export Preference to start exporting the data.

Setting up QBDT Payroll:

  1. Go to our Plan & Pricing website.
  2. Find the exact payroll version and click Get Started.
  3. Tap Check out and enter the necessary information.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Once done, please activate it by following the steps on this article: Activate QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.

IOP set up Export Preference:

  1. In our payroll service, select the Setup tab.
  2. Under the Export heading, select Preferences.
  3. Select QuickBooks Desktop for Windows IIF or One-click from the software drop-down list, then Next.
  4. Pick your account in the drop-down and click Next
  5. Complete the Export Preferences section and tap OK
