Union Employees with Different Fringe Benefits by Job

Hi, I have Union employees who may work in different Locals in one payroll week. Each Local has a different set of fringe benefit rates, so I need the fringes to be based on the hours worked at each job. For example, Employee A may work 3 hours on a job belonging to Local 111 which has a Health fringe rate of 11.70/hour and may work 10 hours an another job belonging to Local 222 which has a Health fringe rate of 10.50/hour and 12 hours to another job in Local 222. Essentially, I need the 3 hours at Local 111 to have a Health rate of 11.70/hr x 3 hrs = $35.10 and the 22 hours at Local 222 to have a Health rate of 10.50/hr x 22 hrs = $231.

I have set up the different Health rates based on Local (ie Local 111 Health, Local 222 Health), and have set up Class Tracking, but how do I assign these rates to the job? When I run payroll, the "Other Payroll" items are being calculated based on the total hours worked (25) instead of Local 111 Health being calculated at 3 hours and Local 222 Health being calculated at 22 hours, both say 25 hours. How can I split the cost of the Health benefits (and others, this is just an example) by the # of hours to a certain job? The ideal would be for the system to know that Job 11, Job 12 and Job 13 are part of Local 111 and therefore Local 111 fringes should be calculated on those hours and Job 21, 22, 23 are part of Local 222 and fringes should be calculated at the Local 222 rate.

I can't see where this is possible without manually overriding the "Other Payroll Items" on the Paycheck Preview screen. Any help is appreciated.

Union Employees with Different Fringe Benefits by Job

Hi there, @Lilalykat. I appreciate your input from every angle.

I can see how the option you're looking for would be beneficial to your company. In QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), you can automatically track your expenses by job for payroll expenses. For the time being, this is how you can track payroll items for fringe benefits: Create taxable fringe benefits payroll items.

With this said, I suggest submitting feedback to our Product Development Team. They look through submitted feedbacks for future updates and use those suggestions to develop changes for the product.

To do this, here's how:

  1. Go to the Help menu at the top.
  2. Select Send Feedback Online.
  3. Click Product Suggestion
  4. Click on the drop-down for Type of Feedback and select Product Suggestion.
  5. Select the Product Area.
  6. Enter your thoughts and suggestions.
  7. Click Send Feedback.

To be updated with our latest news and updates, including product improvements, I encourage you to visit the What's New section on your QBDT account or open this link to view our product update blogs.

You may also consider reaching out to your accountant. They'll be able to provide you with further information on how to track your payroll correctly. If you don't have an accountant, you can find one through this link: Find an accountant.

Please know that I'm only a post away should you have any questions. Have a great day.

Did this get resolved for you?  I am in the same situation, trying to setup payroll for my company and we have the same issue.

Good day, THEWS

At this time, the option you're looking for is still unavailable. We recognize that each company has unique needs. I encourage sending feedback to our product developers, so they'll know you want to have this in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). To send feedback, I recommend following the steps I've provided above.

Our developers periodically update and release new features. They might change how this works in the future. To get updates on our latest news and product improvements, visit the What's New section on your QBDT account or open this link to view our product update blogs.

For future reference for tips and related articles about the "How Do I" steps in QBDT, visit our QuickBooks Community help website.

If you have any other concerns, don't hesitate to visit the Community again. We're always here to help you. Have a great day.

I'm joining in to share some updates about your query, @THEWS.

As I check here on my end, the feature that you're trying to access in QuickBooks Desktop is also unavailable for other QB payroll products/applications. As what my colleagues suggested, you can submit feedback to our Product Development Team. This way, They'll consider your suggestion for future product updates.  To begin, here's how:

  1. Go to Help.
  2. Click Send Feedback Online.
  3. Select Product Suggestions.
