What filing status do you use for Head of household?

Hello, @RB26.

Thank you for reaching out to the Community. I'd be glad to provide information about the filing status in QuickBooks Desktop.

Before going into detail, I'd like to ask if you're setting up a new employee on your QuickBooks Desktop account?

If so, in the Taxes window, it has the option to select Head of Household on the state's tab.

Here's how to choose it:

  1. Sign in to your company file.
  2. Select Employees option and then choose Employee Center.
  3. Locate the employee and double-click on it.
  4. Click on the Payroll Info and go to State.
  5. Under Filing Status, pick the drop-down and choose Head of Household.
  6. When you're ready, select OK.

For more information about the new 2020 W-4 form, you can refer back to this article: 2020 W-4

I look forward to chatting with you soon. If you have any more questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to comment below. Have a good rest of your day!

What filing status do you use for Head of household?

There is not an option under filing status for head of household.  Only option single or married filing separately. So is any resolution needed?

Hello, eyeknot.

I have information regarding the missing Head of Household option.

It depends on the selected state when you set up or edit an employee's state and federal taxes. Certain states do not have the Head of Household option, and the drop-down menu will appear different. For example, Arizona only has Married or Single option. The Federal tab will list additional options such as Don't withhold and Married using Single rate.

I'd recommend reading our Payroll Compliance links to find out more details about the state's withholdings and other payroll tax regulations: Payroll Tax Compliance Links.

If the state is supposed to have this option, you'll want to update the tax table and your QuickBooks release. There's a chance that an outdated release version might be preventing you from seeing the Head of Household option.

To update the tax table manually:

  1. Go to the Employees menu.
  2. Choose Get Payroll Updates
  3. Tick Download entire payroll update, then hit the Update button.

You can also check out the IRS guidelines regarding the employee's withholding details: Hiring Employees. According to the publication, you can withhold the employee's tax as Single, provided if the W-4 form details are incomplete.

After setting up the employee's state and federal withholding details, you can start creating paychecks for pay day

We're always up to answer any follow-up questions about setting up employee's withholdings. You can also add other questions you might have regarding QuickBooks Desktop.
