Re: When will quickbooks online be adding the payroll setup option for MA Paid Family Medical Leave?

Hi there, @ksundman.

The MA Paid Family and Medical Leave tax will be supported in QuickBooks Online starting October 1, 2019. This will be taken out through payroll deductions and if applicable via company contributions.

A payroll update will be released in the later part of October. At the moment, we don't have a definite date when the option for MA Paid Family Leave filing and payments in QuickBooks Online Payroll will be available.

Rest assured our Compliance Team is closely working with your state, and will send out detailed communication regarding the elements of the new tax.

For more information, you can use the following article for some FAQ's, to set up the item, and to determine the rates: Massachusetts Paid Family Leave

Drop me a comment below if you have any other questions while working with QuickBooks. Have a great week ahead.

I am missing one of the payroll items for the PFML. MA-Paid Family Leave Employee

Re: When will quickbooks online be adding the payroll setup option for MA Paid Family Medical Leave?

Hello there, @pvinal.

As mentioned by my colleague MaryGraceS, MA payroll items will be fully added in QuickBooks starting October 1st.

When the tax becomes active, an additional email will be sent explaining that the tax is ready to be set up for your employees. At that time, you will need to assign each of your employees to the appropriate rate share.

You can visit the MA PFML website to confirm your rate share and read up on additional information the agency has provided.

Re: When will quickbooks online be adding the payroll setup option for MA Paid Family Medical Leave?

Payroll updates in QuickBooks Online will be released in the later part of October, cmacdonald.

For now, you can leave the setup as is. Once update is available, here's how you can set it up:

  1. From the Workers menu, select Employees.
  2. Select the employee's name.
  3. Click Edit employee
  4. Under the withholding section, select Edit
  5. Select Massachusetts state taxes, and fill in the following fields:
  6. Hit Done.

Please do the same steps for each covered employee.

For QuickBooks Desktop, you'll need to update your tax table first and then refer to this article on how to set it up: Massachusetts Paid Family Leave

Please let me know if you have further questions. I'll be around to help!

Re: When will quickbooks online be adding the payroll setup option for MA Paid Family Medical Leave?

So just to be clear, the update has not been issued yet so there is nothing to do at this time until it is?

This is outrageous to me since this was effective 10/1/19 (was originally scheduled for June). How am i going to catch up on withholdings that were not withheld from 10/1/19?

Re: When will quickbooks online be adding the payroll setup option for MA Paid Family Medical Leave?

Thanks for joining in this thread, @darlenef. Yes, you can leave the setup the way it is. As mentioned by my peer @Catherine_B it will be released in late October. You can follow the steps provided above to set it up once update is finally released.

To catch up on withholdings that were not withheld from October 1, you can contact our Online Payroll support for recalculation. Here's how:

  1. Log in to your QuickBooks company.
  2. Go to the Help section.
  3. Click Contact us to connect with online payroll support.

If you're using the Desktop Payroll version of QuickBooks, you can check out our help article: Adjust payroll liabilities in QuickBooks Desktop to catch up.

It's STILL  not available and it's mid-November. When will this be online?

Re: When will quickbooks online be adding the payroll setup option for MA Paid Family Medical Leave?

I understand how important this is to you, @dreamday165.

QuickBooks is compliant with all the rules that are executed from your state agency. A payroll update will be released this mid November.

Once updates are available, you'll be notified via email explaining the tax is ready to be set. For now, I also recommend reaching out to our payroll support team for recalculation. This way, you can catch up on withholdings that were not withheld from October 01, 2019.

To reach them, you can follow the steps provided by my colleague katherinejoyceO above.

Also, I've added these great resources that you can check for more details about the MA paid family leave:

Re: When will quickbooks online be adding the payroll setup option for MA Paid Family Medical Leave?

I reached out to Quickbooks on line support yesterday and was assured that an update was coming today.  It is 4:57 p.m. EST time and no update.  This is beyond absurd. This was due to start 8 weeks ago.  Some employees will have more than an hours pay deducted from one check, a significant amount for some, especially right before the holidays. And that is assuming that the update is in place for next week's payroll, doubtful that that will be the case.  Quickbooks has been aware of this requirement since at least January of this year.  QBO has had 11 months to figure this out!  How is this so hard to implement?

I hear you, @KathyfCMG.

Know that your feedback is not taken lightly and are forwarded to the appropriate team members. I assure you that once the update is available, we'll let everyone know. Though I can't provide a definite date and time when this will be supported in QBO, our Compliance Team is currently working on it.

You can check out the articles provided by my colleagues for your reference.

I'd love to provide further assistance if you have any other concerns, so leave a comment. Thanks for stopping by the Community and take care!

Re: When will quickbooks online be adding the payroll setup option for MA Paid Family Medical Leave?

YOU HAVE TO TOGGLE THE TAX EXEMPTION ON /ENTER THEN GO BACK AND TOGGLE IT OFF/ENTER, THEN THE AMOUNT SHOWS UP.  HOWEVER, IT'S NOT RIGHT AND I'VE ALREADY FOUND ERRORS IN THE MATH.    THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING..

Re: When will quickbooks online be adding the payroll setup option for MA Paid Family Medical Leave?

Was this updated?  All my percentages are in but I don't see anything happening on the paychecks to get the back money owed or any current deduction for that matter.   Can I get step by step instructions?  This is incredibly frustrating!!
