Hello there, @peteranshaw.
Here are some insights on how unemployment taxes are treated or managed for employees that live in one state, are employed in the different one, and work remotely in the other in QuickBooks Online Payroll (QBOP).
Where your employees live and work determines the state payroll taxes (State Withholding, State Unemployment Insurance, local taxes, State Disability Insurance, or Paid Family Leave) you and they are subject to.
When employees' workplaces are changing, they're considered roaming employees. They work in more than one state during a given period. They may be subject to State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) or local taxes in each state they work in. However, our payroll products can handle only one SUI tax or local tax jurisdiction per employee. We don’t recommend using any workarounds, as this can cause issues with your state tax forms.
You can read these articles if you wish to learn more about how the system determines the correct state and local payroll taxes:
Also, you can pull up several payroll reports to view information about your business finances and employees in QBOP. You may want to check out this article for the complete list and to guide you on how to access and customize them: Run payroll reports in QuickBooks Online Payroll.
