Why can I not enter "Dependents claimed, in dollars" on Payroll Taxes Setup and Compliance for a new employee?

Are you using the 2020 W4 inside QBO or the obsolete 2019 version that uses numbers of dependents not dollars

Good day, max13.

I'm here to assist you in setting up your new employee.

I'd like to know first what happened when you try to enter an amount in the Dependents claimed, in dollars field. Does it give you an error or you can't save it?

We can perform some troubleshooting steps to help us in resolving this issue. The first one is by logging in to your account using an incognito window, then add your new employee from there. Let's also clear the cache to remove those junk files that can cause issues in QuickBooks Online Payroll.

Additionally, please make sure to use an updated browser. I've added this link to know more about the new Federal W-4: What’s changing with the Federal W-4.

Please keep on posting if you have other concerns. Have a great day and stay safe!

I thank you for the screenshot you've shared, @ARNE.

When entering your employee's W4 information, you occasionally see prompts or pop-up boxes. This contains instructions or explanation on the information that you can enter on each specific fields. You can ignore this prompt and continue with setting yo your employee's information. I've attached a screenshot for your reference.

If you're still unable to enter your employee's dependents claims, you can try accessing your account  using a private browser or an incognito browser. This way, we can isolate this unexpected behavior when trying to navigate within QuickBooks. You can use any of these keyboard shortcuts:

  • For Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • For Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • For Safari: Command + Shift + N

If you're able to enter your employee's information, you'd want to clear your browser’s cache so the system can start fresh. Also, you can use other other supported web browsers. Also, you can run the browser health checkup tool to ensure that your current browser is compatible with QuickBooks.

Lastly, you'd want to make sure to maximize your windows screen. This way, you'd e able to see the Payroll Taxes and Compliance page. You can read through this article for more detailed steps: Unable to see the entire page in QuickBooks Online.

Visit us here again if you have other questions or concerns. I’ll jump right back in to help. Wishing you continued success.

Thank you! in fact this is a bug with the QB App (for mac ), the prompt shows up in front of the field but it's still possible to input the dollar amount...
