Create, Add, or Remove Tags

Use tags to send targeted emails or text messages to contacts who share interests, locations, or more. Create and assign tags from the Tags page, contact table, or a contact’s profile.

In this article, you’ll learn how to create, add, and remove tags in Mailchimp.

Before you start

Here are some things to know before you begin this process.

From the Tags page

Create new tags or tag multiple contacts in your audience on the Tags page. You can also delete tags from your audience.

If you need to remove a tag from a contact without deleting the tag, follow the instructions in this article for removing tags from the contact table or the contact profile.

Create a tag

To create a new tag to apply to contacts later, follow these steps.

  1. Click Audience, then click Tags.
  2. If you have more than 1 audience, click the Audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.
  3. Click Create new tag.
  4. Enter the tag name, then click Create.

All set! You’ll see your new tag listed on the Tags page. You can assign your tag to contacts from the contact table or on a contact profile page.

Create a tag and bulk tag contacts

Create a single or multiple tags to add to several contacts at once. To do this, you’ll upload a CSV file or paste email addresses. You’ll also have the option to exclude the tag from the uploaded or pasted email addresses.

To create a new tag and add it to several contacts in your audience at once, follow these steps.

  1. Click Audience, then click Tags.
  2. If you have more than 1 audience, click the Audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.
  3. Click Bulk tag.
  4. On the Bulk tag contacts pop-up modal, use the Search for or create your tag drop-down and enter the name of your new tag.
  5. Click the new tag name from the + Create drop-down to add it. Add as many tags as you wish.
  6. Click Upload email addresses and add a CSV file, or click Paste email addresses and paste them in the field provided. We’ll ignore any addresses that aren’t already in your audience.
  7. Click the Select action drop-down and choose Tag these emails or Tag everyone except these emails.
  8. Click Apply tag.

Awesome! We’ll display a success message. We'll also display your new tag on the Tags page. To view the contacts associated with your tag, click View.

From the contact table

The process to add or remove tags works the same, whether you’re using your entire audience or a segment of your audience.

Create and add a tag

To create a tag and add it to contacts from the contact table, follow these steps.

  1. Click Audience, then click All contacts.
  2. If you have more than 1 audience, click the Audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.
  3. Check the box next to each contact you want to tag.
  4. Click Tag contacts.
  5. Enter the name of your tag, then click Create.
  6. Click the Choose action drop-down and choose Add tags.
  7. Click Apply.

Great job! Repeat this process to apply additional tags.

Remove a tag

To remove a tag from a contact on the contact table, follow these steps.

  1. Click Audience, then click All contacts.
  2. If you have more than 1 audience, click the Audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.
  3. Check the box next to the contact or contacts you want to work with.
  4. Click Tag contacts.
  5. Click the tag or tags you want to remove.
  6. Click the Choose action drop-down and choose Remove tags.
  7. Click Apply.

That’s it! We'll display the updated information on the contact table.

Untag all

To remove a tag from all contacts in an audience or segment, follow these steps.

  1. Click Audience, then click All contacts.
  2. If you have more than 1 audience, click the Audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.
  3. Check the box next to Email Address and choose Select All from the drop-down.
  4. Click Tag contacts.
  5. Click the tag or tags you want to remove.
  6. Click the Choose action drop-down and choose Remove tags.
  7. Click Apply.

That’s it! You have successfully untagged all contacts.

From a contact profile

You can add or remove tags for individual contacts from their contact profile page.

Create and add a tag

To add a tag to a single contact from their contact profile page, follow these steps.

  1. Click Audience, then click All contacts.
  2. If you have more than 1 audience, click the Audience drop-down and choose the one you want to work with.
  3. Click the contact you want to tag.
  4. In the Tags section of the contact profile, click Add a tag.
  5. Enter the name of your tag or choose an existing tag.

That’s it! The tags for that contact will appear in the Tags section in their profile. To see all contacts included in a tag, click the tag name.

Remove a tag from a contact

If you make a mistake or change your mind, you can remove tags from a contact on their profile page. Just click the X next to the tag to remove it.
