Copy Subscribed Contacts to an Audience

by Intuit Updated 2 months ago

Sometimes, you may want to copy or move subscribed contacts from one audience to another. Maybe you've exceeded your audience's group limit, for example, or use one account to manage different audiences for multiple organizations.

In this article, you'll learn how to copy or move subscribed contacts in your Mailchimp account.

Before you start

Here are some things to know before you begin this process.

  • All audiences in Mailchimp are independent of each other and share no contact data. Review our audience management tips before you copy or move subscribers into another audience.
  • We only allow you to copy or move contacts whose Email Marketing Status is Subscribed. Contacts whose Email Marketing Status is Unsubscribed, Non-Subscribed, or Cleaned cannot be copied or moved to another audience. To learn more, check out About Your Contacts.
  • To retain audience field data you use to personalize emails, make sure the new audience contains the same audience fields. Moved contacts do not retain email activity or signup source data from their original audience.

Copy subscribed contacts

When you copy a subscribed contact, their email address will appear on multiple audiences. We typically discourage users from storing duplicate contacts, because it can increase your monthly billing rate. To copy an entire audience, see Replicate an Audience.

To copy subscribed contacts to another audience in your account, follow these steps.

  1. Click Audience, then click All contacts.
  2. Click the Current audience drop-down and choose the audience you want to copy subscribed contacts from.
  3. If you want to work with a specific section of your audience, click Manage audience, and choose Groups or Segments. Then choose the group or segment you want to work with.
  4. Check the box next to each subscribed contact you want to copy, or click the arrow above the checkboxes to Select visible or Select all subscribed contacts.
  5. Click the three vertical dots, then choose Copy to audience.
  6. Click the Destination audience drop-down and choose the audience you want to copy your subscribed contacts to.
  7. Click Copy contacts.

Troubleshooting

  • My contacts won’t move/copy to my other audience. For compliance reasons, we only allow you to copy or move contacts whose Email Marketing Status is Subscribed. Contacts with other Email Marketing Statuses cannot be copied or moved to another audience.
  • My contacts don’t keep their field data when I copy/move them. Audience field data will only be added to another audience when both contact tables have the same audience fields. Moved contacts do not retain email activity or signup source data from their original audience.
  • I don’t see an option to copy/move my subscribed contacts. Sending, publishing, or scheduling certain marketing content places a limit on bulk actions for your audience. For more information on these limitations, check out our article Limits on Bulk Actions.
