Intuit Data Protect Backup Failed: Firewall or connection issue

SOLVEDby QuickBooks3Updated over 1 year ago

When running Intuit Data Protect (IDP), you get the following error message:
"Intuit Data Protect Backup Failed: Firewall or connection issue"

To fix this error, follow the solutions below:

Solution 1: Run the IDP Diagnostic tool

  1. Right-click the Intuit Data Protect (green padlock) icon in the Windows System Tray (typically located at the bottom right of your screen). Select About Intuit Data Protect.
  2. On your keyboard, press Ctrl+F2 to launch the Intuit Data Protect Diagnostics Tool.
  3. Select Run Diagnostics. If the Diagnostics Tool detects an issue with a firewall or third-party security software, you will need to reconfigure the software and/or hardware to allow access to Intuit Data Protect files. For information about configuring your security software and/or hardware, check your manufacturer’s website, then add the following files for exceptions:
    • C:\Program Files(X86)\Common Files\Intuit\Data Protect\IntuitDataProtect.exe
    • C:\Program Files(X86)\Common Files\Intuit\Data Protect\IbuEnghost.exe
    • C:\Program Files(X86)\Common Files\Intuit\Data Protect\QBIDPServices.exe

Solution 2: Add Windows Firewall ports

  1. Go to the Start menu, then type Control Panel in the search field.
  2. Go to System and Security. Choose Windows Firewall, then select Advanced Settings.
  3. On the left side of the Advanced Settings window, select Inbound Rules. Choose New Rule from the right side of the same window.
  4. Enter the ports, then select Next.
    • Incoming Port: 80
    • Outgoing Ports: 443, 16841
Note: Intuit Data Protect connects to the Internet through HTTP ports 80 and 443. If you are able to browse the internet and log in to secure websites, Intuit Data Protect should work.
  5. Follow the prompts.
  6. Follow steps 1-4 for Outbound Rules.

Solution 3: Clear the Internet Explorer cache, cookies, temporary files, and SSL state

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to the Tools menu, then select Internet Options.
Note: If you can’t find Tools on your browser, press Alt once to show hidden tabs.
  3. Go to the General tab, then select Delete... under the Browsing History section.
  4. Select the following checkboxes: Temporary Internet files and website files, Cookies and website data, History, Form Data, and InPrivate Filtering, then uncheck the Preserve Favorites and website data checkbox.
  5. Select Delete to clear the items.
  6. Go to the Content tab.
  7. Select Clear SSL state, then select OK.

Solution 4: Add Trusted Sites

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to the Tools menu, then select Internet Options.
  3. Go to the Security tab, then uncheck the Enable Protected Mode checkbox.
  4. Select Trusted sites and then Sites.
  5. Uncheck the Require server verification ( https: ) for all sites in this zone checkbox.
  6. Add *.backup.com, *.intuit.com, and *.intuit.net. Select Close.
  7. Go to the Privacy tab, then select Sites.
  8. In the Address of Website box, add the following websites: *.quickbooks.com and *.intuit.com.
  9. Choose Allow each time you add the web addresses.
  10. Select OK.
