Find out how to fix issues when you use online banking in QuickBooks for Mac.

Bank Feeds lets you import bank and credit card transactions from your Financial Institution to your QuickBooks register. It helps you match transactions when you reconcile accounts. Downloads not working? Don’t worry, we’re here to help you.

Before you use the following steps, backup your QuickBooks company file, then use this checklist to narrow down the cause of the issue.

  • Make sure your computer is connected to the internet.
  • Make sure you have the latest release of QuickBooks installed.
  • Make sure you can sign in successfully to your bank’s website.
  • Make sure your bank didn’t report a server outage.
  • Make sure the account info (like account number and routing number) in QuickBooks is correct.

Step 1: Make sure the financial institutions list up-to-date

You can see errors with online banking when the details (website address and name) for your bank are either missing or incorrect in QuickBooks. While this list is updated with the latest release, sometimes the list doesn't update correctly.

Important: Close your QuickBooks before you proceed.
  1. Delete the fidir.txt file from these two locations:
    1. Location 1
      1. Hold the Control key. From the Finder▼ dropdown menu, select Go, then Library.
      2. Go to Application Support/ (change the ‘XX’ to match your version of QuickBooks.
      3. Drag the fidir.txt file to the Trash.
    2. Location 2
      1. From the Finder▼ dropdown menu, select Go, then Applications.
      2. Hold the Control key, then select your QuickBooks version.
      3. Select Show Package contents.
      4. Go to Contents then Resources.
      5. Drag the fidir.txt file to the Trash.
  2. Select your version of QuickBooks below to save an up-to-date fidir.txt file. To save, hold the Control key when you select the link.
    1. 2022
    2. 2021
    3. 2020
    4. 2019
  3. Copy and paste the new fidir.txt file in both of the above locations.
  4. Try to download transactions again.

If this doesn’t fix the issue, continue to Step 2.

This step will help you identify if there is an issue on your bank's servers.

  1. From the File▼ dropdown menu, select New Company.
  2. Enter a name for the test file, then Save.
  3. Fill out the required fields in the Create New Company wizard, then select Finish.
  4. Add the account that was experiencing issues to the Chart of Accounts.
  5. Set up Online Banking for that account.
  6. Select Download transactions.

If the download was successful in the new file, continue to Step 3.

If the download failed in the new file, then there's an issue on your bank’s servers. Skip to Step 4 to contact your bank.

Sometimes online banking issues can be fixed by recreating the affected account. This step will help you determine if a new account will fix the issue.

  1. Edit the problem account.
    1. Go to Lists and select Chart of Accounts.
    2. In the Chart of Accounts window, Edit the problem account.
    3. At the end of the account name, add an asterisk (*).
    4. Select Online Settings. From the Download transactions▼ dropdown menu, select Not Enabled.
    5. Select OK.
  2. Create a new account.
    1. Go to Lists and select Chart of Accounts.
    2. In the Chart of Accounts window, select the + icon.
    3. In the Account type▼ dropdown menu, select Bank.
    4. Enter the original name of the account without the asterisk (*), then select OK.
  3. Close and reopen the company file.
  4. Set up Online Banking, then download transactions to the new accoun

If the download was successful, merge the original account into the new one.

Your bank can resolve most online banking issues.

Important: Most banks require an ICR ( Identity Confirmation Request) before you can access data from the PFM (Personal Financial Management) software. Some banks require the ICR after you install a new update or version of QuickBooks as well.

For more details about your bank’s security requirements, sign in to your bank’s website and check your Message Center or Notifications inbox. You can also contact your bank for instructions.

  • All United States and Canadian financial institutions that support QuickBooks Online Banking have an escalation path to the Online Connectivity Group.
  • When you contact your bank, speak with a bank representative familiar with QuickBooks Bank Feeds. Make sure your account(s) are activated for the services you need for QuickBooks.

If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, you can contact Support to get help troubleshooting the issue.
