Set Internet Explorer to be your default browser

To use QuickBooks Desktop Payroll service, you must set Internet Explorer as your default web browser. Some updates do not install correctly otherwise. This article provides instructions on how to set Internet Explorer as your default browser.

To set Internet Explorer as your default web browser:


Beginning January 12, 2016, only the most current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical supports and security updates. Click here to view the list of operating systems and browser version combinations that will be supported by Microsoft.

Microsoft officially released its new default browser (EDGE) as part of Windows 10 on July 29, 2015.  At this time, QuickBooks Desktop does not support EDGE.

Internet Explorer 11.0

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Gear icon in the upper right corner (or click Tools).
  3. Click Internet Options.
  4. Click the Programs tab.
  5. Under Default Web Browser click the Make Default button.
  6. Click OK.
