My Email From Name Shows "mailchimpapp.net" or "mcsv.net"

by Intuit Updated 2 months ago

You might notice that some email clients display "on behalf of mailchimpapp.net," "on behalf of mcsv.net," or "via mailchimpapp.net" in the sender details section of your delivered email from Mailchimp. This appears if your From email address hasn't been authenticated, and it lets email clients know that your email comes from a legitimate sender.

In this article, you'll learn how authentication works and how to remove Mailchimp authentication information from your email.

Beginning February 2024, Gmail and Yahoo will require a custom authentication and a published Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance (DMARC) record for anyone sending more than 5,000 emails to Gmail or Yahoo addresses in a 24-hour period. To prevent your emails from bouncing, we strongly recommend authenticating your email domain and configuring DMARC.

Also, if you use a free email service like Gmail or Yahoo for your From email address, we strongly recommend you switch to an email address from a private domain, like the one you use for work or for your website.

Why authentication information appears

To determine if an email is safe, email clients look at 2 addresses when they receive bulk email: the email address in the From field, and the sender address (this is also called the Envelope From Address). The sender address is not always visible, but it is necessary to send email through Mailchimp. It's based on our sending servers, and usually contains mcsv.net, mcdlv.net, mailchimpapp.net, or rsgsv.net. Some email inboxes display both your information and our information in the sender details of an email.

How authentication affects your From name

Subscribers who use Gmail, Outlook, Hotmail, or another Microsoft webmail service may see an indication that your email was sent by Mailchimp on your behalf.

For example, if you send a Mailchimp email from newsletter@pottedplanter.com, we'll authenticate it with our domain. Email clients display Mailchimp sending domain information near your email's From name to help recipients determine if an email is safe to open.

Here are some examples.

  • Gmail
    NO ALT-gmail-via-mailchimp2

  • Outlook
    NO-ALT-outlook-via-mailchimp6

Remove “on behalf of” or “via mailchimpapp.net” information

The best way to remove this extra information from your email is to use your own domain and authenticate it. DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) is commonly used to authenticate email domains. The email will appear to come from your servers within the email client, and ensures the removal of Mailchimp information from the sender details section of the email.

While this works for most email clients, some, like Outlook, may still display authentication information after custom DKIM is set up. This is specific to each email client and isn't something we can prevent.
