Manage declined credit card payment due to invalid zip code error

SOLVEDby QuickBooksQuickBooks Point of Sale7Updated November 11, 2021

Find out what to do if your customer's credit card transaction fails due to invalid zip code.

Invalid zip code error is displayed when attempting to process a payment from your customer with a billing address outside the U.S. They may have a ZIP code (or Province code) that includes characters that do not meet the U.S. 5 digit standard.

In most cases, card issuing entities inform their cardholders on how credit card transactions work in the United States, including invalid zip code error.

For transactions that have problems due to invalid zip code, your customer (the cardholder) needs to contact the card issuing bank to determine if there are options for using their international card with U.S. based businesses that require a 5-digit numeric zip code. It is their responsibility to provide such information when processing an international card.

Do not enter any information other than what was provided by the cardholder. This is a violation of the Card Processing Rules and Regulation and a valid reason for dispute against you (the Merchant), since the zip code is inaccurate and you made changes to the original transaction data.

Note: Point of Sale (POS) merchants may need to adjust AVS or CVS settings in QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale before processing appropriate international cards.
