Add or Edit Your Tax ID Number

by Intuit Updated 1 week ago

If you’re using Mailchimp for business purposes, you may want to add a Tax ID to your primary contact information. Saving your Tax ID in Mailchimp ensures that it appears on receipts, which can be helpful for accounting purposes. Additionally, a valid Tax ID might be required to qualify for local exemptions or self-assessment options.

In this article, you’ll learn how to add a Tax ID to your account and how to troubleshoot the validation process.

This article is provided as a resource, but it’s not tax advice. If you have questions about your specific tax requirements, we recommend that you consult a local tax professional.

Add or edit your Tax ID number

To add or edit your Tax ID number, follow these steps.

  1. Click your profile icon and choose Account & billing.
  2. Click the Billing drop-down and choose Billing information.

  3. In the Primary account contact section, click Edit.

  4. Review or update your primary account contact information.
  5. Enter your Tax ID into the Registered VAT/GST/Tax ID field.
  6. Click Save.

All set! Your company's Tax ID will now display on future receipts. If you qualify for self-assessment, you should see that reflected immediately in the billing estimate on your account overview page.

Troubleshooting Tax ID validation

Depending on your location and jurisdiction requirements, Mailchimp will verify your Tax ID when you save your tax information and again before you complete any purchase. If you’re having trouble saving your Tax ID, there are steps you can try depending on the error.

There was an issue validating that address

Mailchimp verifies your primary contact address first, and then your Tax ID. If the “There was an issue validating that address” error appears when entering your Tax ID, it means that we can’t validate the entered address. After you enter a valid address, Mailchimp will try to verify your Tax ID.

Enter a valid TAX ID or leave blank

The “Enter a valid TAX ID or leave blank” error appears if your address is valid but the system can’t validate your Tax ID. There are 2 common issues to check with this error.

  • Match your address and Tax ID
Your Tax ID and primary contact address need to match for a successful validation. Edit your primary contact address to match the country where your Tax ID is registered. If you need to save an additional address that doesn’t match your tax registration, you can change your contact information in other places in your account.
  • Check your Tax ID formatting
Your Tax ID won’t validate if it’s entered in an incorrect format. When you enter your Tax ID, check for formatting errors. Be sure to include any spaces, numbers, letters, and special characters. Check with your local tax authority if you don’t know how your Tax ID should be formatted.
