About the Advanced Segment Builder
by Intuit• Updated 1 week ago
Our advanced segment builder takes basic audience segmentation to the next level. Use the segment builder to target your marketing content to specific sets of subscribed contacts in your audience. Create complex segments that can combine both 'and' and 'or' logic in a single segment.
In this article, you'll learn how the advanced segment builder works, and what you can do with it.
Things to know
- The advanced segment builder is included with the Standard plan or higher.
- The advanced segment builder isn’t available in automations.
How it works
The advanced segment builder is similar to the basic segment builder, but you'll find more depth to its logic and structure. While basic segments help you find contacts with simple, straight-forward logic, advanced segments provide complex controls, so you can target contacts on a more granular level.
Advanced segments combine different conditions to sort contacts in nested groups. A top-level condition is required, and shares its logic with the groups that follow it. Secondary logic can be applied to the conditions inside each group, but each group is taken as a whole, and weighted equally.

Here are the differences between segment types.
Basic Segments | Advanced Segments |
---|---|
Available for Free and Essentials plans | included with the Standard plan or higher |
Contain up to 5 conditions | Unlimited conditions |
Preferred for simple, straight-forward contact filtering | Preferred for more complex and flexible contact filtering |
Can't combine and/or logic | Can combine and/or logic |
What you can do with the advanced segment builder
Segmentation can help you streamline how you filter contacts. With the advanced segment builder, you can add a set of nested conditions that allow for different combinations of data you’ve collected—like purchase activity, gender, age range, and more.
For example, instead of sending 2 emails to 2 basic segments, use the advanced segment builder to send a single email to 1 segment that includes the same contacts.
When you combine and/or logic in a single segment, you're able to include contacts who meet different conditions. There's no limit to the number of conditions in an advanced segment, but the more conditions you add, the longer it may take to generate.
Segmentation options
Advanced segmentation has some different condition types than basic audience segmentation, so you'll use and combine them differently. The conditions you can use depend on the data available in the audience you're working with.
When you choose your segment conditions, you'll see these options.
- How your contacts are tagged
Filter by a saved tag. - How your contacts are grouped
Filter by a saved group. - Contact details
This category contains conditions based on a variety of data about your contacts. These conditions include email address, email client, language, contact rating, VIP status, email marketing engagement, predicted gender and age range, and more. - How your contacts were acquired
A contact's email marketing status tells you what their relationship is to your email or SMS marketing campaigns. Use the email or SMS marketing status column to see subscribed, unsubscribed, non-subscribed, or cleaned contacts. All advanced segments include the email marketing status. To view the SMS marketing status, your audience must have SMS marketing set up. - E-commerce activity
If you've connected your online store, you can segment by purchase activity, such as timeframe, email interaction, store, product, product category, and total spent. - Email, SMS & automations activity
Segment based on your contacts’ email, SMS, and automation activity. This activity includes whether or not an email was sent, opened, replied to, or clicked. - Other activity
Segment your contacts based on how they interact with other connected channels in your account. These channels can include a store, app, or website.
