2018 Pro company files transfer to 2020 Pro

Hello @EB011187,

Good job on installing both versions of QuickBooks on your desktop. Let's create a backup copy of your company file so you can transfer it from Pro 2018 to the Pro 2020 version. Let me show you how.

  1. On your QuickBooks Pro 2018, go to File.
  2. Select Back Up Company.
  3. Click Create Local Backup.
  4. Under Backup Options, select Browse.
  5. Choose a folder location where you can easily access your company data.
  6. Select Save it now.
  7. Click Save.

Learn more about creating a backup copy of your company file with this article: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

Once done, you can open the 2020 version of QuickBooks and restore the backup copy of your company data that you recently created. To do so:

  1. Go to File.
  2. Select Open or Restore Company.
  3. On the What type of file do you want to open or restore? window, select Restore a backup copy.
  4. Choose Local backup.
  5. Find and open the recent backup copy of your company data.
  6. Select Open.
  7. Click Finish.

In addition, here's an article you can read to learn more about how you can restore a copy of your company data: Learn how to use your backup company file (.qbb) to restore your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.

Lastly, I've also included this helpful article in case you'll bump into errors when restoring a backup copy of your company data: Learn what to do if you can't restore your backup company file in QuickBooks Desktop.
