Hello there, MBC.

I can help you fix the error with the QuickBooks portable file.

This error usually occurs when the portable copy of your company file is damaged, stored over the network, or on a removable device. What we can do is rename and copy the file, then save it directly into your desktop.

From there, we can go back to your QuickBooks program and restore it. For the steps on how to copy the file to the desktop, I'm adding an article that can help:

Create or restore a QuickBooks portable company file.

Please keep in touch with me here should you need any further assistance with the error. The Community always has your back.

This works so thanks! Bigger issue is that this is a new problem. Last week I restored a portable file from the same company and no problem. This week I received the error on 2 different companies. Both are used to sending portable files and I have never had problems in the past. What has changed (other than me running an update on my QB file)?

Good to see you again here in the Community, MBC.

I can provide you a little more information about opening a company file in QuickBooks Desktop.

Files may not open in QuickBooks for reasons such as:

  • Corrupted or damaged QuickBooks Company file.
  • The file is already opened by another user on the shared network.
  • Using wrong methods to open particular file types.
  • Issues with reports in the file.
  • Issues like access permissions, encrypted or compressed files, problems with filename and extension, and corruption of the data within the file.

For more information about this, you can check out this recommended article: Resolve Problems Opening QuickBooks Desktop or your Company File.
