Can't upgrade file from QB Desktop Pro 2017 to Pro 2020

File works just fine in Desktop Pro 2017  (except won't allow me to upload credit card charges).

so i downloaded Pro 2021.

In 2021, it fails when trying to open the file.
So I tried Recover from backup.... it fails when doing update.
So i tried recover from portable backup.. it fails when doing update.
When it fails, i get  a small window (that i can't even enlarge) showing the error report.   Any suggestions?

Note, I still have QB 2017 and file continues to work fine there.  I've tried making a fresh backup... and get same result.

How can I recover my file?

Can't upgrade file from QB Desktop Pro 2017 to Pro 2020

Let's perform some troubleshooting steps to upgrade your QuickBooks file, sfried.

I appreciate you for performing some solutions to get this sorted out. After installing your new version, we need to prepare your QuickBooks 2017 company file before upgrading it. Let me show you how:

  1. Open your original version of QuickBooks. Then open the company file you want to upgrade.
  2. Press F2 to open the Product Information window.
  3. Look in the File Information section. Then, take note of where your company file is saved on your computer.
  4. Run the Rebuild Tool for your company file.

Once done, QuickBooks will ask you to upgrade your company file the first time when opening it in your newer version. Just follow the steps and details in the Upgrade your company files after switching to a new version of QuickBooks Desktop article. Then, proceed to Step 3: Upgrade your company file section. If you're having trouble opening your company file on your software, see What to do if you can't open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop article to troubleshoot the issue.

Feel free to visit our Install, upgrade, and register page for more insight about activating and registering Intuit products.

I'd like to know how you get on after trying the steps, as I want to ensure this is resolved for you. Just reply to this post and I'll get back to you. Take care always.

Can't upgrade file from QB Desktop Pro 2017 to Pro 2020

@sfried

Just to clarify your problem, are you able to create a backup file (i.e QBB) ? If it is failed, run the Verify/Rebuild Data utility.
