I had windows 7 & quickbooks desk 2017.
bought new laptop with windows 8 & bought quickbooks desktop 2020. Is there anyway to just get my 2019 data onto 2020 version. My not real “ computer smart”.
1. Secure a backup file (QBB) on your current QB Desktop
2. Install your new QB 2020 on your new computer and activate the license.
3. Copy and paste that QBB file into a folder of your new computer
4. Restore it on your QB 2020
We can move your data from one computer to another, 1Chris.
To move your 2019 data from your Windows 7 to your new laptop with Windows 8, here's the process that we can do:
Before we do any of the steps, I'd recommend doing the Verify and Rebuild process. This is to ensure that your current data is not damaged or corrupted.
Once we're ready, we can start the first step. We can follow the steps under the Back up your company file manually section in this article: Back up your QuickBooks Desktop company file.
For the Step 2, make sure you've already installed QuickBooks Desktop 2020 on the new laptop. After that, we can restore the company file. You can follow the detailed steps in this link: Restore a backup of your company file.
You can also use this article for reference of the whole process: Move your company files to another computer.
I know you can do this! Just seek our assistance if you need one. Have a great day!
So, what happens if you change computers without saving the program to a removable device? I've tried to get my license info but what I receive isn't working when I try to download the program. I originally purchased QB Pro 2019 from Costco and downloaded it in 2019.
Thanks for joining this conversation, @Kessa.
If you're trying to move your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) company file to another computer, it is highly advisable to save (backup) the file on a flash drive or an external device (or share it if your new computer is on the same network). This way, you'll able to restore it on the new computer.

On the other hand, if your license is not working, I highly suggest contacting our Phone Support team. They're able to pull up your account in a secure environment and check the root cause of the issue. They can also perform other troubleshooting steps to fix this for you.

You've come to the right place, @willtwalsh.
There's no need for you to purchase a new QuickBooks. You can directly download a new installer from the Downloads and Updates page. Once completed, you can install it on your new PC. Let's get it started!
First, let's download the QuickBooks installer. Here's how:
Once completed, you can now proceed with the installation process.
You are now ready to activate QuickBooks Desktop 2020. Just click the Help menu once the program opens and click Activate QuickBooks. You can refer to this article for more detailed steps: Activate QuickBooks Desktop for Windows.

We installed Quickbooks 2020 and Payrol on our laptop (old) within a week the laptop died and I purchased a new one. After installing on the new laptop and trying to active it, it gave me an error "This product number is already registered for Payrol" or something to that effect. How do I resolve this problem, we need to get things rolling with our new business.
Congrats on your new laptop, ard018!
I understand that you need to reinstall QuickBooks Desktop. Let me share some details about it.
You'll have to sign in to your payroll so you can access it on the new laptop. Let's go to the Employees menu and select My Payroll Service then Account/Billing Information. Then, log in to your Intuit Account.
I've included these two articles for more details:
I'll be here if you need anything else. Stay safe!
Hello! I'm due to update by QB desktop version. Does it matter if my accountant still has my file for modifications for tax season before I update? Also, I plan to switch QB to a new laptop at the same time. Just want to make sure I don't run into any troubles along the way.
Thanks for posting your concern in this thread, @KSRE. I understand the need to change your computer to the most updated one.
Since your accountant has your file for tax modifications, I'd recommend you wait until your accountant is done to avoid running into problems.
You'll want to check out this article and read through the Important section: Use the Accountant's Copy.
I've got you this article as your reference whenever you're ready to update and change your computer.
I'd be delighted to help some more if you have any other concerns or follow-up questions. Take care!
