Connecting a truck based laptop to our network

We currently have QB2020 Desktop setup on 2 computers using one of them as a host computer.  Only one is used at the same time.  We are now doing repairs in the field and I would like to be able to write up invoices while sitting in the truck going to the next job.  I have mobile hotspot on my phone but I cant figure out how to connect back to the host computer (in the shop) when not on the same WiFi router.

Welcome to the Community, @Hammer4.

Let me clear things out for you. You need to set up QuickBooks Database Server Manager in QuickBooks Desktop for you to share your company files with other computers over your network. I'll show you how:

  1. Close all open programs on your server computer, including QuickBooks.
  2. Open the install file you downloaded. It's called Setup_QuickBooks.exe.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions. If you need to find your product or license numbers, here's how to find them.
  4. When QuickBooks asks you to choose an install type, select Custom or Network Options, then select Next
  5. Choose the best option for your network setup and then select Next
  6. Follow the rest of the onscreen instructions. When you’re ready, select Install

Windows may ask you for permission to access the folders that hold your company files.

Once done, set your firewall permissions. Make sure you give Database Server Manager permission to run on your server computer.

For additional information about multi-user set up in QuickBooks Desktop, you can refer to this article: Set up and install a multi-user network for QuickBooks Desktop.

Reisntalling and setting it up as you described had no effect.  I still have to be on the same WiFi network in order for it to make a connection.  I want my desktop server and laptop be miles apart and still operate as if they are on the same WiFi router.

Hello Hammer4,

I've read the thread and it seems that you're wanting to access your QuickBooks Desktop company file in multiple locations. We'll be needing a hosting service to achieve that kind of setup.

Intuit has partnered with many hosting services which you can choose from. You browse this article to see the list of authorized hosting services: What hosting providers are authorized by Intuit?

Or you can directly visit this link for other information: http://www.intuithostingprogram.com/.

With regards on how the hosting program works or be set up, you can reach out to the hosting service's support team. They can guide you on the step by step process on how to make it work for you.

Meanwhile, you might also want to know about the multi-user licensing that allows users to work on the hosted computer at the same time. You can check out this link to know more about adding a user license: Add a user license to your QuickBooks software.

We'll be right here if you have more questions about the process.

@Hammer4

You may connect your host with a remote desktop solution. One of the solutions is ST

You will need another solution, should you need to access the host in multi-user mode.
