Why not helpful?  That is how you restore a backup (original question).  If your program is spinning (not part of the original question) and you cannot connect to the saved backup, perhaps you need to close the program and re-open it.  It is also possible that you are restoring from a backup drive (USB stick?). Copy that file to the desktop and restore from there.

If that is not the case, open qb in the add/remove programs and do a repair to the program.

I have restored a company file and renamed it.  When I open the file, the banner at the top still shows the old name.  How do I update it?

Thank you for joining the thread, @DHSWI.

I'm here to help rename your company file successfully.

To rename your QuickBooks Desktop company file, you may need to update both the company file under My Company inside QuickBooks and the file location where the file is located.

To rename the company file inside QuickBooks:

  1. Go to Company.
  2. Select My Company.
  3. Click on the pencil/edit icon under My Company.
  4. Go to the Contact Information.
  5. Rename the company name beside Company Name.
  6. Click OK to save the changes.

To rename the file from it's location, you may check this article: Rename QuickBooks Desktop company file.

After following the steps provided above, you'll be able to update the company file successfully. Let us know if you have any other questions by adding a comment below. Have a wonderful day!

I just upgraded my QB to 2019 from 2016. My son has a company and did a backup on his 2019 QB and I am unable to get a sucessful backup.

Thanks for getting back, Rickford.

I want to make sure you'll be able to restore backup successfully.

We can try performing a couple of troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue. Let's begin by checking if the file name of your company file includes a special character.

To remove this, here's how:

  1. Search for the location of your company file.
  2. Right-click the file name and select Rename.
  3. Create a file name that has no special character and Enter.

For additional troubleshooting options, you can check out this article: Error: Failed or Error: Restore Failed, when you try to restore a backup.

If doing all the recommended steps doesn't work, I suggest giving our QuickBooks Care Team a call so they can further investigate and isolate this issue for you.

Here's how you can reach them:

  1. Go to this link: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Select your QuickBooks Desktop version.
  4. Select a topic.
  5. Click the Get Phone Number button.

I'm still here whenever you need more help with this or questions about restoring backups in QuickBooks Desktop.

  3. Drag the Attached Documents Library folder to the same folder as the QuickBoooks company file.
  4. Click the copy of the file saved on the desired location or go to File, then Open Company.

Re: Are you trying to restore a data file? File>open or rest...

Hello,

My old computer, with QB2018 with QB2018 crashed. I then re-install QB2018 on another computer.

When I try restore a 2017QBB file to the QB2018 on the replacement computer, it cannot restore. The cursor just spins round and round.

So my  question is: do i need to convert 2017QBB file to a format compatible to QB2018 ? If so, how do i do this ?

Thank you

hi @mike_eas ,

You can restore old version file on newer version. It might be your QBB file is corrupted or something wrong with your QuickBooks 2018. You should try to install QuickBooks 2019 Pro Trial License and restore your QBB. If you got the same result, it is possible that your file is corrupted. You need to purchase a service to repair it. I could recommend you one later.

Just my 2 cents.

Attempting to restore company file from external hard drive. I keep getting a message that tells me the file is "Read Only'.

I have NOT had this problem before using this same external hard drive. I look at the file and "Read Only" is NOT checked

Thanks for joining the conversation and providing those details, @MRS72.

Since you made sure to remove the read-only attribute and continue to get the same result, let’s try copying the file to your desktop. Then, restore it from there.

Make sure to run QuickBooks as Admin when performing the following steps:

  1. From the File menu, click Open or Restore Company.
  2. Choose Restore a portable file, then hit Next.
  3. Locate the file, select it and click Open.
  4. Read through the message prompt, then click Next.
  5. Pick a location where you want to restore the portable file.
  6. Hit Save.

For more details, please take a look at this article: Create or restore a QuickBooks portable company file.

This information should help you get back up and running in no time.

Keep me updated on how this goes. I’m always here ready to help if you need anything else. Have a good one!
