Does my server need to have QB running for the clients to work without these errors?

I have checked all the solutions and verified settings:
- server is the only machine with Host Multi-User Access enabled
- QuickBooksDBXX and QBCFMonitorService are both set to Automatic and Restart on Recovery

The most recent problem was error 6189, 816.  This occurred when one of my client machines had the company file open and we tried to open the file on the server at the same time.  These error codes appeared on the server and the only way to fix it was to log the client out of QB.  Is there a requirement to either not have the server open a company file or have it open the file before clients can access?

This is starting to feel like a bug.  I closed QB on all machines.  I opened the company file on one of the clients, everything worked.  I then opened the same company file on the server itself, it worked.  I then tried to open the same file on the other client and immediately got 6177,0 error.  I verified the QB versions all matched, the company file path is good, and File Doctor did not find anything wrong.  I tried to open the company file on the broken client again and still getting error 6177,0.

Hi @henderslice,

I appreciate the amount of detail you've included in your post. The error 6189, 816 indicates an issue with your multi-user network and isn't something that relates to both the server and the client opening the same client file in succession.

The first thing I can suggest is to download the QuickBooks Tool Hub app. Open the Tool Hub and run the Quick Fix my Program.

Here's how:

  1. In the QuickBooks Tools Hub, select Program Problems.
  2. Select Quick Fix my Program.
  3. Start QuickBooks Desktop and open your data file.

Additional troubleshooting steps are in this article: How to fix Error 6189, 816.

As for the error 6177, 0 that you see, I'd suggest you ensure that your QuickBooks is up to date. Other steps to resolve this error can be found here: Fix Error 6177, 0.

If you continue to encounter errors, I recommend contacting our Technical Support Team for further assistance.
