Hello, i need to transfer my desktop version of quickbook to online version

It's good to hear from you today, jbishop514.

I'd be glad to help you transfer your QuickBooks Desktop data to QuickBooks Online. If you're able to create a backup copy of your company file, you can use our QuickBooks Desktop trial and restore your file from there.

Once restored, you can follow the step-by-step process below in transferring your data.

Step 1: Get your desktop file ready:

  1. Make sure QuickBooks is up-to-date. You can use and download the QuickBooks free trial to update your company file.
  2. Check if your company file isn’t too big to export.
  3. Print a copy of your Sales Tax Liability report. You'll need it to enter adjustment entries after your move.
    1. Go to the Reports menu, then select Vendors & Payables. Select Sales Tax Liability.
    2. From the Dates▼drop-down, select All.
    3. At the top, from the Print▼drop-down, select Save as PDF.
    4. Choose the folder you want to save it in, name the file, and select Save.

Step 2: Import your desktop file to QuickBooks Online:

  1. Log in as an admin to the company file you want to import.
  2. On your keyboard, press Ctrl+1 to open the Product Information window, then press Ctrl+B+Q.
  3. Select Start your export.
  4. Sign in as an admin to your QuickBooks Online company.
  5. If you track inventory in QuickBooks Desktop:
    1. Select Yes to bring them over, then specify the as of date.
    2. Select No if you want to set up new items later in QuickBooks Online.

Please be reminded that Only QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced can track inventory. Both plans use the FIFO method.

  1. Select the Choose online company ▼drop-down, and choose the QuickBooks Online company you want to be replaced by your company file.
  2. Select Continue.
  3. Enter “Agree” in the text field, then select Replace.
  4. Select Yes, go ahead and replace the data, then select Replace.

Here are some articles that will help guide you more about the conversion process:

I'll be around to help if you need assistance with the steps or if you have additional QuickBooks questions. Have a great rest of your day!
