help on opening a file

Hi there, brianklu.

Are you trying to restore a backup file from your old QuickBooks in QuickBooks for Mac 2020? Le's try moving the file to your MacBook. Here's how:

  1. Click File, then Utilities, and then Copy Company File for QuickBooks Mac Desktop.
  2. Save the file in the removable device. Then, send it to your MacBook.
  3. Open QuickBooks Mac Desktop.
  4. Click File, and then Restore.
  5. Locate the copy, and then click Open. Click OK when prompted.
  6. Enter the name of the company file, then click Save.

if you're referring to a different file and not a backup copy, you can use the Verify/Rebuild Data Utility Tool. This tool find the most common data issues in a company file and fixes them. Use this article as a guide: Verify And Rebuild Data In QuickBooks Desktop for Mac

I would also recommend reaching out to our Technical Support Team in case you're still getting the same error message. Here's how to reach out to them:

  1. Go to this link:
  2. Select QuickBooks Mac Desktop.
  3. Click Company File.
  4. Scroll-down a little bit and click Start a Message

Feel free to check out as well as this Getting Started guide for the version that you're using for additional reference: QuickBooks Desktop Mac 2020 User's Guide.

I'd be glad to get back here if you need more help. Thanks!
