The backup file is in a .dmg container and cannot be restored directly. Double click the .dmg file to mount it, once mounted drag the company file from the open window to your documents folder. From QB use file open company and navigate to the file.

How do I restore from a backup in quickbooks for Mac 2016. I followed the instructions but the file is grayed out when I select existing

I had to reinstall QB on my Mac. I had all the QB files stored on cloud. So even though I had to install a new hardrive, I didn’t lose any files (YAY!) I followed the instructions, but I get a message telling me it’s not compatible and I need to update QB. When I go to run the update, it tells me it’s all up to date. The latest file is from 1/18/19 but I can’t open it. I’m confused. What should I do?

All my backup files are greyed out too.  Nothing happens when I double-click them  It was created from the same version of QB I'm trying to restore to, so it HAS to be compatible.

Hello, CindyTheK.

This unexpected behavior usually happens when their is data issue with your company file. What you can do is utilizing the Verify Rebuild Data tool. It's a built-in tool that can help automatically fix data issues with your company file. To do this, here's how:

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Select Utilities, then choose Rebuild Data.
  3. On the QuickBooks Information window, select OK. Follow the onscreen steps to save a backup.
  4. Let the tool repair your file. It may take some time.
  5. When the tool finishes, select OK.
  6. Go to the File menu.
  7. Select Utilities, then choose Verify Data.
  8. Let the tool check your file for data issues.

Then, you may continue performing the recommended solutions in this article starting with Solution 2 if you’re still having data issues: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file

Once done, close and re-open the company file then log in as the company Admin. That should help get past the hurdle you're experiencing.

Don't hesitate to leave a comment below if you have any other questions about this. I'm always here to help. Have a good one. Stay safe!
