How do I set it up so that the "write a check" comes up with the next check number instead of "To print"?

Using Quickbooks for Mac. I manually write checks, then record them in Quickbooks. To record checks I use the "write a check" feature (vs. entering bills and using the "pay bill" feature). The check number comes up as "To Print" and I can't change it to a check number without first printing a "check". I know it can be changed because at another company using the same version of Quickbooks and using the same "write a check" feature it automatically comes up with the next check number filled in (which I can change if I want). How do I set it up so that the "write a check" comes up with the next check number instead of "To print"?

How do I set it up so that the "write a check" comes up with the next check number instead of "To print"?

This worked! I guess "To print" is the default setting because the "print this check later" (printer icon) was selected by default. That icon works as a toggle button so when I clicked it, it "unselected" the print later feature and put a check number on my check instead of "To print". Thanks so much!!!!

I'm using QB online that you download onto my mac. Even online I don't see that toggle anywhere.

In the online version it's right under the check number field, unless it's been relocated lately.

The check for Print later is there but there is no Printer icon that I can toggle. Thank you anyway. If anyone else know the answer for this, it would be great.

yes I understand that it is just annoying that when I uncheck "print later" it comes up with the wrong check number and then goes to print screen and doesn't go back to write check. It is a difference of about 20 clicks to write checks from what use to be about 5. Just a lot of ways to mess up. I want to print one check at at time. We just changed from QB on Windows to QB online on Mac. Definitely not as user friendly.

Hi there, kay1234.

We're unable to set the Print Later option in the program. For now, we'll have to toggle the Printer icon at the bottom of the Write Checks window since the program uses the To Print option as the default printing settings.

At times, we we roll out updates based from the request that we received from our customers. Rest assured, I'll be taking note of your suggestions and ideas.

I also encourage reading our FAQs page to know the different tricks in printing checks with QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.

You'll have to select the Print features, then choose the Check option in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Accountant, @jbnphnx. Let me share further details about this.

The check number is assigned depending on the check number preference you set. You're able to access the check number field when you write checks through the Print icon. From there, you'll be given the option to print a single or multiple checks you marked for Print Later. Let's open the Write Checks window to open the check number field by performing the following steps:

  1. Go to the Banking menu.
  2. Select Write Checks.
  3. Enter all the necessary check details.
  4. Click the Print icon above.
  5. Fill in the Printer Check Number field.
  6. Select OK.

I've attached a screenshot below that shows the last three steps.

To learn more about writing checks, I'd recommend checking out this article: Create, modify, and print checks. It also includes topics about deleting or voiding checks, printing and memorizing them, to name a few.

Let me know if you have other writing check concerns or inquiries about managing your transactions in QBDT. I'm just around to help. Take care always.
