Thank you for reaching out to the QuickBooks Community, Andreajofuller. This error you're receiving is related to the multi-user network. There are a few solutions to correct this problem. Here's how:

Run the Quick Fix Program

  1.  Close QuickBooks.
  2. Download the QuickBooks Tool Hub file.
  3. Once downloaded, open the file.
  4. Follow the wizard and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. Search in Windows for QuickBooks Tool Hub or locate it on the desktop and select it.
  6. In the QuickBooks Tools Hub, select my Program Problems.
  7. Choose Quick Fix my Program.
  8. Go back to QuickBooks and open the company file again.

If the error is still occurring, it would be best to restart all the computers and servers. Restart the server (which would be the computer hosting the company files) and the workstations—once restarting the computers, open QuickBooks on the server and then each workstation. If you can open Quickbooks, there is no need to proceed further.

However, if you are still experiencing problems, follow this link to run the QuickBooks Database Server Manager on the server and move the company files locally. These solutions should resolve the error code. If you need any additional assistance, please reach out to me. I'll be here to assist. Keep me posted!

Hi, this does not work for my computer. I took over the Quickbooks from someone else and my file is on a USB. It will not let me place it on my hard drive because it says it is open on a server somewhere and I don't know how to close it. Please let me know if there is a way to override this so I can have the file on my hard drive - I don't think the quickfix will work until it is there because it cannot find it at the moment.

Hi there, @andreajofuller.

QuickBooks Desktop registers into one computer only, unless the hosting is turned on. The error you have mentioned is a known issue if a computer that's not the server is hosting the company file. One of the solutions is to turn off the host server from the main server. Here's how:

  1. Go to The Product Information or simply press F2.
  2. Find Local Server Information and turn off Hosting.

Another workaround is to rename the .ND and .TLG files. No worries, renaming these will not cause you to lose QuickBooks data. These files are automatically re-created when you open your company file. Here's how:

  1. Locate the folder that contains your QuickBooks company file.
  2. Look for the same file name as your company files but with extensions .ND and .TLG.
           a. company_file.qbw.nd
           b. company_file.qbw.tlg
  3. Right-click each file and click Rename. Add the word OLD at the end of each file name (Example: company_file.qbw.nd.OLD).
  4. Reopen QuickBooks and try to sign in to the company file.

If you are still not able to open your files, you can refer the other possible resolution in this article and look for the You are opening the file over the network section: Resolve Error -6000, when opening a company file.

Feel free to comment below if you  anything else. I'll be here to help. Take care.

When I go to Product Information, there is no option for me to turn it off. I also cannot find a .tlg file. I renamed the .nd file and nothing happened.

I do not have access to any other files from Quickbooks. I was given this file from someone else to take over, so I'm assuming she would be the host server and I'll have to get in touch with her?

@andreajofuller

It is possible the original file is hosted at the server in multi-user mode. Ask her to send you the backup file (i.e QBB). Another option, call and ask Intuit Data Support to fix your file. Otherwise, you have to purchase a 3rd party file repair service.

This did not work.  I am not using multi user and my files are located on my hard drive.  I have done the tool hub and I have done the uninstall repair, neither work.

My file is not on a server, it is on the hard drive.  I have run all the programs suggested and I still can't open my files

I downloaded the quickbooks tool hub and followed the instructions.  It did not fix my problem.  I have to restart the computer every time I want to use quickbooks.  This is a single laptop not a server with multiple users.

thanks,
