You're most welcome, @system. To clarify, that only applies to install/reinstall QuickBooks to the same computer.

In your case, you can directly install QuickBooks Desktop on your new computer. Make sure you have a backup copy of your company file saved on a flash drive or an external device to physically move the files to your new computer.

You can follow the steps in Move your company file to another computer outlined in this article:  https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/manage-data/move-your-company-files-to-another-com...

If you don't have a backup copy of your company file, you'll need to create a new one. However, if you have Intuit Data Protect (IDP) subscription, I'd suggest you contact our Customer Care team to help you restore the backup copy of your file.

You can reinstall your license to any computer any time as long as you can activate it. Make sure you can login to your CAMPS.

Hi, plung.

Thank you for your response.

I'm wondering how intuit manage the limitation of the number of install.

I read that one user can install QBDT on one desktop and one laptop.

If I reinstall QBDT in another laptop, that's mean I've installed one desktop, two laptops at the same time.

Is it ok to reinstall QBDT before uninstalling from the broken laptop?

Hi system,

For a single user, your license entitles you to install the software to two computers provided you own both systems. Let me guide you on how to reinstall QuickBooks.

  1. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooks.exe).
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions. Accept the software license agreement and then click Next.
  3. Enter your Product and License numbers. Then click Next.

Please check this article for more information and detailed steps: Move To Or Reinstall QuickBooks Desktop In Another Computer.

Keep in touch if you need anything else. I'll be right here to help.

If you purchased a single user license (by Subscription or by makinga one-time upfront payment depending on your location and the purchase options available to you) or a single user add-on pack license, you may install the Software for access and use solely by 1 specific person on: (i) 1 primary computer, and (ii) 1 additional computer (e.g., a laptop or a home computer that you own and use in your business) for use by that same specific person.

You may try to install it in on your new computer as long as you are not using multi-user mode.

Hi Plung,

Thank you for your help. I forgot to respond to you about accessing the CAMPS.

I can log in the CAMPS, thank you.

So, according your help, we can install QBDT in 3 computers unintentionally.

Is it right?

Thanks for getting back to us, @system

Yes, you can install QBDT and move your company file to another computer as mentioned by @plung. Just ensure that you're using it as a single user mode as the configuration will not be copied if you're using QuickBooks Desktop in a multi-user setup.

Here are the things that you need to do to reinstall or move your  QuickBooks Desktop installation:

  • Ensure you have your product and license information ready.
  • Uninstall existing QuickBooks program before the reinstall.
  • Download the installation files or insert the CD on the computer where you want QuickBooks Desktop installed.
  • Install QuickBooks Desktop as you normally would. For more information, you can follow the steps in this article: Install QuickBooks Desktop

You can also read through the help article provided above by my colleague @MariaSoledadG about moving or reinstalling QBDT to another computer. It covers everything you'll need to know about the whole re-installation process.

Feel free to message us again if you have additional questions. We're always glad to help you further.

Hi, katherinejoyceO

Thank you for responding to my question.

I have one question.

You wrote;

  • Uninstall existing QuickBooks program before the reinstall.

But if I can't access existing QBDT because the PC is crashed, how should I do?

Hi there, Joy1016,

Yes, you can install QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Pro 2019 on a laptop. The word 'Desktop' is referring to an application that needs to be installed on your computer.

These steps below will guide you through installing the system:

  1. Make sure your laptop meets the system requirements.
  2. Download QBDT 2019, then click Download.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooks.exe) and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Accept the software license agreement and then click Next.
  5. Enter your Product and License numbers, then click Next.
  6. Select Express, then click Next.
  7. Click Install. When it finishes, select Open QuickBooks to get started.
  8. Activate QBDT.

For more details with the steps above, feel free to read through this article: Install QuickBooks Desktop. I've also attached a quick video tutorial below for additional guidance.

You can also check out the Move or reinstall QuickBooks Desktop to another computer link to learn how to use the Migrator tool. It's another way of moving your company file.

Keep me posted if there's anything else you need. I'm always here to help you out.

I have QB2019 on my laptop(primary) and same version on a pc(backup in case I need to do payroll and laptop not working)

I had to do payroll from home this week and I don't know how to move file from thumbdrive to laptop.

There is a warning I will lose all my old data.   My goal is to meld the to sets of records.

I'm sure it's easy but I don't want to erase anything.

Hello there, @mbrowne.

Thanks for reaching out to us. I’m here to share some information about moving QuickBooks using the Migrator Tool.

You can use the Migrator Tool to move QuickBooks Desktop. Aside from migrating the application itself, this tool will also copy the last 3 company files opened.

In this process, you'll need to connect your laptop to the internet and secure a USB flash drive with enough free space to hold your QuickBooks files.

For more information about this process, you can visit this article: Move or reinstall QuickBooks Desktop to another computer. This also contains information about how to manually install Quickbooks Desktop to your new computer and what to do next after installing it.

Also, If you encounter problems while restoring your backup company file, you can follow the steps provided in this article to fix them: Fix backup company file issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us anytime.

I can no longer access my other laptop, it gave it up fight, is there a way to install in the new laptop without having to uninstall (as per below)I have installed QB on the new laptop but it wont activate, it comes up with a message, something along the lines of: the activation was unable.....

Reinstall or move your QuickBooks Desktop installation

  1. Have your product and license info available.
  2. Uninstall the existing QuickBooks program before attempting a reinstall.
  3. On the computer where you want QuickBooks Desktop installed, download the installation files or insert the CD.
  4. Install QuickBooks Desktop as you normally would.

Thanks for joining this conversation, @Dinks2018.

As mentioned by my colleague Katherine above, if you have a backup copy of your company file (saved on a flash drive or an external device), you can just install QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) on the new laptop. Then, all you need to do is to restore the file.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Open the newly installed QBDT, then go the File menu at the top to get to the Open or Restore Company
  2. Click Restore a backup copy, then Next
  3. Select Local Backup and Next again.
  4. Locate your backup file, then tick Open.
  5. Once ready, hit Save.

If you want to know more about transferring your company file to a new computer, please check out this article: Move your company files to another computer.

On the other hand, if you don't have a backup, you need to manually create a new company file as a workaround. However, if you have Intuit Data Protect (IDP), I highly suggest contacting our Phone Support team for further assistance on how to the backup file to your new laptop.

Here's how to reach them:

  1. In QBDT, go to the Help menu at the top to get to the QuickBooks Desktop Help
  2. Select Contact Us at the bottom to connect with our live support.

Please let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions, and I'll get back to you as quickly as possible. I want to make sure everything is taken care of for you. I'm always here to help. Have a good one!

Thank you for your reply @FritzF

Following your instructions, still have to attempt to activate: this was the message I received when I did your first step.

Completed the activation forms, and this is the message that keeps coming up when I try:

Does this mean I need to purchase a new quickbooks license?

I have gone through this thread and a few others to see any other way but I cant seem to find any one who has the same kind of trouble.. :/

Thank you so much for your assistance, it is truly appreciated!
