Hey there,

The QuickBooks Community has your back. I can assist with opening that file. A QBX file is an accountant’s transfer copy of a QuickBooks company file. If a client has sent you a QBX file, you cannot use it until you either convert it to a “regular” accountant’s copy file (QBA) or a company file (QBW). To convert it simply follow these steps:

  1. Click File, Accountant’s Copy and Open & Convert Transfer File.
  2. Read the Accountant’s Copy overview and click Next.
  3. Review the information provided and click Next.
  4. Browse to the computer or network location where the QBX file is saved, select the file and click Open.
  5. Enter the file password if applicable and click OK.
  6. Read the information about the file and click OK.
  7. Choose a location to save the QBA file, change the filename if desired and click Save.
  8. Enter the password for the file if needed. The password is the same as the associated company file’s administrator password.
  9. Click OK if you want to upgrade the file to your version of QuickBooks.
  10. Review the information provided and click OK.

If you have any other questions please feel free to reply below to contact me at any time. Have a great day!

You will need to exchange Pro for Accountant. If you just purchased in error Intuit should make an exchange for you.

Only the Desktop Accountant version can convert the client supplied accountant's copy to a working file and then create the change file to send back.

@jackmneedham

You need to have QB Desktop Accountant version

If you wish to get a one time license, you have to purchase thru a partner/reseller.

I am using Quick Books Pro 2020.  You indicate click File and select Accountants copy.

When I open QB there is no option for file but open or restore.  There has to be more clarify of opening a QBX file

I can clarify things out for you about the QBX file that was sent to you, WLSCA.

This file is a client's accountant's copy that needs to be converted into a working file (.QBA). Doing this will help you make changes to the client's books.

Also, you need to use an accountant version of QuickBooks. If not, you won't be able to work with the file. And, your client should also use QuickBooks Desktop Pro so you can open the file.

You  refer to this link: Use the Accountant's Copy to learn more about the process of file transfer feature in QuickBooks.

Stay in touch with me if you need additional information. I'm always right here to help ensure you're able to open the QBX file.

I am running QB Accountant Desktop 2019 (as a license under/with my accountant). I want to buy/have my own license and was hoping I could buy QB Desktop Pro 2021 and restore my company file from the Accountant Desktop to Desktop Pro and was wondering if this will work before investing the $399 for Pro? Thank you,

Hi there, @JD594.

I can share with you some details about restoring the company file.

You can back up a company file from your QuickBooks Accountant Desktop 2019, and then restore it in Desktop Pro 2021.

Here's how:

  1. In QuickBooks, go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Click Restore a backup copy and then choose Next.
  3. Select Local Backup and then click Next.
  4. Browse your computer for your backup company file (.qbb).
  5. Choose a folder to decide where to save your restored company file.
  6. Select Ope and when you're ready, select Save

If you would like to use our QuickBooks Pro 2021, feel free to check out this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/desktop/pro/.

Also, here's a detailed step on how to download and install QuickBooks Desktop 2021.

Keep in mind that the Community is ready to help anytime if you need assistance. We're always here to help. Take care always!

Please be aware that if you purchase Quickbooks Pro you will be unable to open an accountant's copy.

I thought that "Pro" meant professional.

@Valpal1

If you are an accountant, you should have the QBD (Premier) Accountant edition to manage your client's files.
