Hello there, karli1.

I appreciate you taking the time to reach us back. Let's get this sorted out so you'll be able to successfully export your QuickBooks Desktop files to QuickBooks Online (QBO).

It would be easier to transfer data from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online if you have supported QuickBooks Desktop version (2017 onwards). Since you have QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2009, you'll need to create a backup and download QuickBooks Desktop Trial version then export the files.

In your case, since you're not seeing the option to export data to QuickBooks Online, may I know what QuickBooks Trial version did you download?

If it's the QuickBooks Desktop Pro, you can reset the updates. I'll walk you through how:

  1. Go to Help.
  2. Click Update QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Under Update Now, check the box for Reset Update.
  4. Click Get Updates.

If you've downloaded the QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise Trial version, you can follow the steps below:

  1. On your keyboard, press F2.
  2. then press and hold CTRL + B + Q and click Enter.
  3. From the Export to QuickBooks Online window, click Start your export.

That's it. You should be all set. If there's anything else that I can help you with exporting data from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online, leave me a comment. I'd be glad to assist you further.

Welcome to the Community, karli1.

I can help you update and export your QuickBooks 2009 to QuickBooks Online. Let's get started.

To update your QuickBooks company file, you can try our QuickBooks trial version to update your file and start exporting them into QuickBooks Online.

Check out this article to try out the QuickBooks trial version: QuickBooks Desktop trial links.

After updating, you can follow the steps below to export the file from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

Step 1: Review some critical information before converting your file:

  • You can only import QuickBooks Desktop data within the first 60 days of your QuickBooks Online company start date. When you import, your Desktop file will replace your Online file and overwrite any existing information.
  • We suggest you keep your data file in QuickBooks Desktop and maintain your transactions on both sets of books until you determine QuickBooks Online is right for your business.
  • Some information may not be imported when you move your file.

Step 2: Export your QuickBooks Desktop company data; QuickBooks Desktop Pro/Premier files:

  1. Open the file you want to export.
  2. Go to Company > Export Company File to QuickBooks Online.
  3. Follow the prompts to connect to QuickBooks Online.

Don't see the option to export? Update your QuickBooks Desktop. Here's how:

  1. Go to Help > Update QuickBooks.
  2. Select all updates in the "Update Now" window, then Get Updates.
  3. Once the updates are complete, select Close, then File Exit.
  4. Start QuickBooks again and finish installing the updates when prompted. These updates may take 15 minutes or more to install, depending on when QuickBooks was last updated.

Here's an article with detailed steps and information about exporting your QuickBooks Desktop company file: Convert QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

The trial version (updated) doesn't give me the option to export for QuickBooks Online.

Is there something else I can try, or did I miss something?

Thank you, Karl

Worked great! Following your instructions, I used the free trial (Enterprise edition) and was able to send my old 2009 desktop version data to my new QuickBooks Online account. Thank you!
