I ran verify data and there were errors. How do I locate and view the error log?

Find QBWIN.log files

QuickBooks Desktop writes messages about what is happening in QuickBooks to a specific log file.

  • In Windows, the file is named Qbwin.log

The log file contains QuickBooks Desktop messages, as well as information created by the Verify Data, Rebuild Data, and Condense Data utilities. It does not show General Protection Fault or Invalid Page Fault messages or messages or errors from other programs. New entries and errors are added to the end (or bottom) of the log file. The file includes date and time stamps with each log entry to help you identify the most recent entries.

Detailed instructions QuickBooks for Windows

QuickBooks for Windows generates a separate QBWIN.LOG file for each QuickBooks version within each QuickBooks user. Each time you start QuickBooks, it renames the old QBWIN.LOG file and creates a new one.

Access the QBWIN.LOG file via the F2 window

If you have one version of QuickBooks Desktop installed, use the following steps to access the QBWIN.LOG.
Note: Please use the steps from Access the QBWIN.LOG in Windows if there is more than one QuickBooks product installed.

  1. In QuickBooks, open the Product Information window by pressing the F2 key or Ctrl + 1.
  2. In the Product Information window, open the Tech Help window by pressing the F3 key (or Ctrl + 2 using the "2" key at the left end of your keyboard).
  3. Click the Open File tab.
  4. In the Select a file to open list, double-click QBWIN.LOG.

I ran verify data and there were errors. How do I locate and view the error log?

Hi everyone:

I seem to be missing something in all these Error Reports.  I can drill down to that QBWin.log like a champ but once I'm there --- I'm stumped.  I've tried to do a search/find of some of the things mentioned in the Error Report but can't ever seem to pin point what I'm looking for and even if I was so fortunate to be able to find what I'm looking for --- how do I go about fixing the error from that screen?  Thanks

I ran verify data and there were errors. How do I locate and view the error log?

Thanks for coming back, @Jain.

I have some information about how to resolve the QBWin.Log error. You can find the program messages and errors created by Verify, Rebuild, and Condense Data utilities and the solution on the log. I'll walk you through how.

  1. Open the QBWin.log file, then press CTRL+F on your keyboard.
  2. Enter "Begin Verify" to find the last entry of Begin Verify on your log file.
  3. Then, look for errors. You may see error messages about your .log files:
    • Verify Master: Duplicate transaction number: Master, Trans, txn#, date, doc#.
    • Verify Master: totTrans wrong. Is ### should be ###.
    • Verify Master: Next trans number is ### should be ###.
    • LVL_ERROR--Error: Verify Names List: Index XXX record XXX.

After correcting the error, update QuickBooks to the latest version and then reboot your computer. Need more details? Check out this guide: Fix QBWin.log errors.

If you still need help with the error report, please contact our Technical Support. They have tools that can access you file and assist you further. Here's how to reach out:

  1. In your home page, go to Help at the top and then QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Select Contact us at the bottom.
  3. Type a brief description of your case in the Tell us more about your question field. Then, hit Search.
  4. Choose Get Phone Number or Start a Message.

I'm also attaching this link for future reference. From there, you'll find the different tools that help fix common program errors.

Keep me posted if you still have questions or concerns; I'm always here to help. Have a good day.
