I upgraded from Self Employed to QBO. Not all my data came through. Can my data be retrieved?

It cannot be retrieved like you think nor is there a specific upgrade since you are dealing with two entirely different platform types.

QBSE is single entry and the rest of quickbooks is double entry. Unless you exported to excel and entered the second half of double entry prior to import you are guaranteed to lose data.

That being said - you still have 365 days of reports only access to QBSE and you could have exported transaction lists to excel before cancelling your QBSE.

If that is not enough you can resubscribe for a month to retrieve individual data snippets but do use copy/paste between multiple open browser windows to migrate your missing data

I upgraded from Self Employed to QBO. Not all my data came through. Can my data be retrieved?

Good Morning, @alysa5683

It's always nice to see a new face in the Community. Yes, that's correct @john-pero. There isn't a way to upgrade from QuickBooks Self-Employed to QuickBooks Online because they're two different product platforms. The only way to export and import the information is by using an Excel CSV file. However, ChronoBooks is designed to help people export their company data from QBSE to QBO. Other customers have found it helpful to use ChronoBooks to retrieve that data or move it from one account to another.

Here's an extra link that can help you export and import your company data

If you have any more questions, please let me know. I value you and the success of your business. Happy Tuesday!

I didn't realize that there was a special way to upgrade from QBSE to Essentials and now my entries have been duplicated 6 times.  I'm trying to get through to Qbooks Support chat but it's not working....I haven't 'canceled' my QBSE that I'm aware of, but I did upgrade through the subscription screen.  Do you know if there is a way to pull the QBSE data file, so I can do it the correct way?  This will take me forever to to clean up the duplicates.

Thanks for joining us here in the Community, @shivelyb.

I want to ensure that you'll be able to clean up the duplicate entries that are showing up on your end.

To help you in determining why the entries are showing as duplicate together with pulling up your QuickBooks Self-Employed, I suggest reaching out to our Customer Care Team. They have the tools that can look further into this matter and apply a fix.

While you can't access your account you can utilize our test drive account so you'll have the option to contact them. Here's how you can reach them:

  1. Hit on Assistant at the top.
  2. Type in Talk to Human.
  3. Click on I still need a human when prompted with other help options.
  4. Choose your preferred way to speak with our representatives.

On the other hand, if you're referring to duplicate bank transactions, you can simply follow these steps below on how to delete them once you can access your account.

Here's how to delete them:

  1. Select the profile ⚙ icon.
  2. Press on Bank Accounts.
  3. Make sure your bank or credit card account is connected once.
  4. If there's a duplicate, select the toggle to OFF in the Show account column.

For more options depending on the device that you're using, please scan through this link: Handle duplicate transactions in QuickBooks Self-Employed.

I upgraded from Self Employed to QBO. Not all my data came through. Can my data be retrieved?

Is there no way to retrieve the data from the servers?  An Intuit employee recommended this action, and it caused a significant data loss.

It would be reckless to not have a backup or some sort of data recovery system.  I understand that QBSE and QBO are different entities, but the fact that they've been connected via a pseudo-easy "upgrade" button means that one of them has to take responsibility for the lost data.  The loss of data from switching platforms and data types should be made explicitly clear during the upgrade process.  This appears to be a recurring problem and the fact that this has happened multiple times this year indicates that Intuit does not value the data of it's customers.  This reflects very poorly on the integration capabilities between the branches of Intuit.

Again, I repeat that this was the instructed action from an Intuit customer service representative.

Let me clear this up so you'll know whether or not you can still access your data in QuickBooks-Self Employed, alex_1010101.

When switching your account from QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) to QuickBooks Online (QBO), this doesn't mean that all your data will automatically be deleted. You still have read-only access for up to 1 year to get hold of your data in QBSE. You can log in to your account and export invoices as PDF. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Invoices tab.
  2. Under Action, click the drop-down arrow and select Export as PDF

For more information, you can go to the Reports menu and run financial reports so you can export them into a CSV file. In addition, here's how to export mileage information

To give you a reference so you'll be guided in QBO, you can visit this article for more information: Getting Started With QuickBooks Online.

I upgraded from Self Employed to QBO. Not all my data came through. Can my data be retrieved?

Unfortunately, your suggestion cannot be followed.  When logging into QBSE, the QBSE dashboard loads temporarily without data before redirecting to QBO. There is no time when QBSE can be accessed before QBO loads.

Can you advise on how to access the QBSE dashboard so your previous post can be followed?

Let me help you log in, Alex_1010101.

You can use this login page to sign in to QuickBooks Self-Employed: Self-Employed.

If it will still route you to QuickBooks Online, let's perform the basic troubleshooting to get around the issue. Let's start by opening the program using an incognito window. It's the best place to isolate browser hiccups. Here are the shortcut keys:

  • Google Chrome: press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: press Command + Shift + N

If you can log in to your QBSE account, you can go back to the main browser, then clear the cache to refresh it. It's advisable to delete them periodically to prevent and fix web issues.

On the other hand, you can use a different browser to help us narrow the cause of this behavior.

If it didn't make any difference, I suggest reaching out to our customer care support so an agent can take a better look at this.

Get in touch with us if you have other concerns. The Community is available 24/7 to help you. Take care!

I upgraded from Self Employed to QBO. Not all my data came through. Can my data be retrieved?

Thanks for your prompt response.  Unfortunately, the incognito window did not help the problem.  The QBSE begins to load and then re-routes to the QBO dashboard.  This does not seem to be a browser issue. I have attached a video showing the log-in process.

Hopefully, this video will aid you in directing this issue to the correct technical staff.  I would prefer to avoid another customer support call, as I don't believe this is the correct group to resolve our problem.  We spent several hours on the phone with customer support yesterday, but were repeatedly told that the bulk of 4 years worth of data and receipts could not be retrieved.  While I understand that it might fall beyond the bounds of normal operation, I have a hard time believing that there is NO way to retrieve the data.

As I've seen multiple posts in the forum with similar difficulties and data loss coming from this 'upgrade', I think this is something the Intuit management and IT should be made aware of.  Clearly, the customer service representatives we spoke to yesterday had not been properly trained on the mechanics of this upgrade.  We appreciate the attitude of the representatives and the quick response of the employees on this forum, but the problem clearly lies deeper in the Intuit organization.  We are not dealing with terabytes of data here; it should be straightforward to backup the data on the QB servers, upgrade the service, and then verify that the data has been transferred properly.  I understand that changing formats may cause the data transfer to have some issues, but the backup data must be kept and must be readily available until the successful transfer of data has been verified.  This is a tool for businesses, so professional IT due diligence is expected.

I am currently experiencing this EXACT same issue. Has this been resolved. I cannot log back into my self employed account after upgrading to quickbooks online and need to go back to export my csv information as all my invoices are now messed up now. Please help.

As Alex wrote, I cannot believe that quickbooks would have such an easy way to upgrade and lose data at the same time. That is fundamentally ridiculous as a user and subscriber of your services. If this hasn't been fixed please send this to your technical team ASAP because I am not an incompetent person and I am sure others have and will continue to have this issue with your poor user experience design when upgrading services. Why would I upgrade my service (pay more money) to lose my data?! I am considering looking elsewhere for bookkeeping services because of all the issues I have had with Quickbooks.

Hi there, Davis9029.

I know that this hasn't been easy for you. Let me share additional information about the conversion process.

Once you move your data using the Explore QuickBooks option, you'll be automatically routed to QBO's interface every time you sign in to QBSE. This is because your login credentials have also been converted.

If you need to go back to your QBSE account to get your older data, you'll have to get in touch with our technical supports. This way, we can pull up your account details and reactivate your access. You can chat with us through this link: Contact Support.

Additionally, here are some articles that you can read to help extract your transactions and other financial data:

Please help KlentB!

I have found myself in this exact same predicament and I am desperate to retrieve the data that was lost when my client upgraded from QBSE to Simple Start. I am on the phone with QB Support right now and they are offering no resolution other than re-doing the work that I have spent so much time on and the client has paid for.

I am completely shocked that this has happened. Please help.

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, @NW Accountant.

I appreciate you for taking some steps to get this issue sorted out. I'm here to provide some information on how you can move your data from QuickBooks Self-Employed account to QuickBooks Online.

To move your data in QuickBooks Online, you'll need to manually import them in the system. As mentioned by my colleagues above, being able to transfer your QBSE data to QBO automatically isn't available.

You can download your transactions in a CSV file and upload them into QuickBooks Online. Even if you decide not to import everything, it's a good idea to download all of your transactions for your records.

To do that:

  1. In QuickBooks Self-Employed, select the Transactions menu.
  2. Select the transaction types, accounts, and time period you want to download from the dropdown menus.
  3. Select the download icon at the top of the transaction list.
  4. Save the file somewhere that's easy to find, like your Windows desktop.

For complete details about this process, please follow the step by step procedure in the If you don't see the Explore QuickBooks option in this link: Switch from QuickBooks Self-Employed to QuickBooks Online.

Know that you can also utilize a third-party application to import your entries automatically in QBO. You can explore our app site to look for the application that suits your business needs.

I hear you and realize the importance of moving your data from QBSE to QBO in just a few clicks. Please know that QBSE and QBO have different structures because QBO uses double-entry accounting while QBSE does not.

To add up, don't forget to cancel your QBSE subscription once you start working in QBO.

For your reference, here's an article that you can use to help you in navigating QBO and its great feature: Video tutorials for QuickBooks Online.

This just happened to me.......

Upgraded without capturing my data (assuming that it would go along during the upgrade). Now I can't access my QBSE account to retrieve it.
