It's not a warning.  It's a normal notification that QB is about to update your file to the new version file format.

The window says "Warning. The company file needs to be updated.  Please ask your QuickBooks Administrator to update the file".  When "OK" is tapped, nothing happens.

Hey there, @rbwaters. Thanks for reaching back out.

You must be logged into the file as Admin to allow it to update the Company File. You'll want to get in touch with the Admin of the file or use the Admin login information to update the file.

If you're having issues logging in as Admin, check out: Reset your password for QuickBooks Desktop

Keep me updated. I'm only a reply away if you have any additional questions — cheers to a safe and productive week ahead.

Right. Only the Admin user can update a QB company file.  Log into the file as you open it as the Admin user and then you can update it.

Trying to change password on 2020.  Instructions for 2020 say:

"1. On the Company Login window, select I forgot my password.
  2. Select an email from the drop down list,"

There is no drop down list that results from this action.

I do not use a password for the company files I'm trying to update.

I want to make sure that you can update your password, rbwaters.

Since there's no option for that specific action in the drop-down list. We can use the Automated Password Reset Tool to reset your password.

You can follow the steps below:

  1. Download the Automated password tool for QuickBooks Desktop.
  2. Select your QuickBooks Desktop version.
  3. Enter the necessary information, then select Next.
  4. Accept the license agreement to download the tool.
  5. Run the Automated Password Reset tool, then enter the token number received via email.
  6. Select the same QuickBooks version from the QuickBooks Desktop Products drop-down.
  7. Click Browse for Company File, then select the company file you want to reset the password for.
  8. Enter your New Password and then Confirm New Password.
  9. Select Reset Password to finish the process.

To learn more about this process, you can read this article: Use the Automated Password Reset Tool for QuickBooks Desktop.

If you have any other concerns or questions, please let me know in the comment section. I'm always here and ready to help.

When trying to download Automated password reset tool, found the following:

For version 2020 and above you can reset password from within the product
Learn more about password reset.

When clicking on "Learn more about password reset", I'm returned to same screen provided  by Michael K (QuickBooks Team) in previous communication which doesn't solve the problem.
