Re: migrating old data using usb

Thanks for coming to the Community for help, @RobertJack.

Since your file is older than 2016, you need to download and install an updated trial version using the new computer. Then, restore the company file and use it for conversion to QuickBooks Online. Make sure to log in as admin to both programs to perform the process.

Here’s how:

  1. Read through this article and click the link for your QuickBooks version:
  2. Click the QuickBooks executable file installation.
  3. Choose Yes to all, then click Next.
  4. Agree to the Software License Agreement, then select Next.
  5. Enter the License and Product numbers stated in the article when downloading the program, then select Next.
  6. Select the type of installation for the computer and choose where you’ll be using QuickBooks.
  7. Pick a new install location, then select Install
  8. Hit Open QuickBooks to get started! (You don’t have to register the trial. When prompted, close the window to avoid getting lockout of the program).

Now, follow the steps below to restore the portable copy of the company file:

  1. From the No Company Open window, click Open or restore an existing company.
  2. Choose Restore a portable file, then hit Next.
  3. Locate the file from your flash drive, select it and click Open.
  4. Read through the message prompt, then click Next.
  5. Pick a location where you want to restore the file.
  6. Hit Save.

For more details, refer to this article: Create or restore a QuickBooks portable company file.

Once done, you’re ready to convert your QBDT data to QBO. Before you do, please take note of the following important information:

  • The imported Desktop file will replace and override existing Online file and information.
  • Some data cannot be imported, so make sure you’re aware of the import limitations. Also, the feature differences between the two.
  • The file must not be over the target limit of 350,000 to convert it successfully.

I recommend checking out this article for reference: Convert QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online. In the same article, you’ll find the detailed instructions on how to move your file from Desktop to Online.

That should answer your concern for today.

Keep me updated on how this goes. I’m always ready to help if you need anything else. Have a good one!
