Missing Icon Bar - QuickBooks 2013

The top bar (Title/Icon Bar?) with the icons for various sections has disappeared from my QB, and I have been trying to search for an answer for how to get it back... unfortunately, everything I have found instructs me to go to the View menu, which I don't have (there is only: File Edit Lists Company Customers Vendors Employees Banking Reports Window Help) I was hoping I could find some advice on how to get this section back without having a View menu? It's driving me crazy. ;) This is a multi-use license, if that makes a difference.

Thank you!

I am also having issues with the top icon bar "disappearing"!!!  I select View, Left Icon Bar and it looks fine, but if I change it to Top Icon Bar, the bottom is getting cut off just a little bit, or the bar is not appearing at all.  I may reinstall.  Never had an issue like this before.  Anyone else?

I also have this problem, it disappears or a little bit of it shows at the top.  I go into View, Left Icon Bar, then Top Icon Bar and it comes back but not like it should be compared to other versions of qb.  Can someone please fix this??  It is very annoying!!

hmmm, I was with a client yesterday and the icon bar was cut off very close to the bottom. It made me worry, as this was what mine looked like b4 it started "disappearing". Plus issues with other things. Was there a recent Windows 7 update that is making software behave differently than in the past? I'm having "Not Responding" issues with Word and Adobe Acrobat (but not Excel).  For the record.

This discussion includes comments on QuickBooks Mac 2014, QuickBooks Mac 2013, and QuickBooks Online running on a Mac.  All have very different implementations of a toolbar. I can't keep track of who has what version.  Suggest starting a new thread and we can start over. Also very helpful is screenshots of the problem you are seeing.

The company tool bar disappears whenever it feels like it, this has started happening after installing "Mavericks", I have reported the problem several times to QB's but never get a response from them.
To get the tool bar back, I have to Click Company - Hide Tool Bar (Even though the tool bar is hidden anyway) - Company - Show Tool Bar.

The toolbar in 2013 and earlier can be problematic if you change screen resolutions often (connecting to a projector or "docking" a MacBook on a different monitor).  Once you have the toolbar visible, drag it to the top of the screen if it isn't already there.  Then click the green "gel" button - this causes it to "lock" into place.   Another thing you can try if this happens again is to quit QuickBooks and throw out the contents of ~/Library/Preferences/com.intuit.quickbooks2013.plist and any other "quickbooks2013" entries in the Preferences folder.

You may also have some third party extension (particular any third party utilities that provide functions to windows in all applications) that is incompatible with QuickBooks.

In 2014 we rewrote the toolbar.  Its now on the side and no longer has these issues but the change to the side hasn't been universally popular.

I do not like the side toolbar.  I like the top toolbar.  I wish you could make it work properly.  It keeps disappearing for no reason. And for me, I have a heck of a time getting it to come back.

Also, I have QB 2014 but I can't find the quickbooks2014.plist file - how do you reset the toolbar in QB 2014?

Here are suggestions to improve the left toolbar:
1.  Allow the user to adjust the width
2.  Allow the user to get rid of the "do more with QB" spam at the bottom
3.  Allow the user to get rid of the "my shortcuts", "View balances", etc. at the bottom.  E.g., I just want my shortcuts and don't care about the other stuff.
It currently takes up too much space and doesn't display all of my shortcuts.

While I am at it, here is another suggestion for you.  The new 2014 doesn't show enough lines of invoices, quotes, etc.  We have long invoices and quotes and the new format takes up too much space above and below the items and descriptions.  You can redesign and shrink the space required for this other information so it is more compact, and make more room for the items that are on the invoice, etc.  (I do sometimes expand to full window, but that is annoying and doesn't even help that much and then you lose the handy shortcuts above the quote/invoice/etc.).

Try "customize toolbar" at the bottom and drag whatever you do not want off the toolbar.

It does not let you drag off the "do more with Quickbooks" items nor the 4 options (view shortcuts, view balance, run reports, open windows).  Although, it did let me grow the shorcuts window downward to hide the 4 options.

Are you using QuickBooks Online? I don't have those options on the toolbar.

SkinnyRaven is using QB for Mac (have you never used a Mac?  They are different, ya know).  This discussion was started regarding instability of the top icon bar/tool bar in QB2013 and 2014 for PC's.  I don't think anyone was discussing the online version, as there is no "Custom Tool Bar" type option in the online version.  Anything else I can help you with?  BTW, my icon bar has been well behaved for quite a while now; at least for 2013.  I don't use 2014 too much.  Yet.

I could be wrong but it looks to me that @Lauren the OP is using QB Mac 2013. The question is @nhojaw toolbar options (view shortcuts, view balance, run reports, open windows) do not exist in QB Mac, hence the version question.

You are right, it does look like @Lauren is using Mac. I found her complaint on a search for the issue I was having, and thought it was the same thing, but I guess not. There were a few other complaints like mine, and I thought this was one of them.  TY, SkinnyRaven, for the wake up call.

I was having the same issue with 2014 Pro ... Here's what "fixed" it (at least temporarily): Got to Edit - Preferences - Desktop View. There is a checkbox: "Switch to colored icons/light background on the Top icon Bar" ... when I unchecked and rechecked the box, my top icon bar reappeared.

I did not know we could change the color and background of the icons.  This worked!  Thanks!

Try restarting your computer as it sounds like it's a computer glitch.

No, I can't blame it on the computer. I accidentally clicked out of the toolbar... so I did it to myself! But I figured out all I had to do was to to Company > Show company toolbar. I just didn't realize it was called a toolbar. Duh. Thanks!
