My company file won't open

I am new to Quickbooks 2013 for Mac, and have created 3 sample companies. Each time I create one, the next time I go into "Open Recent" it will not open the file, and it creates an endless loop of Backups of whatever company I am trying to open. I am ready to import all of my customers, but am afraid to do so, because I can never get back into any company more than once. What am I doing wrong?

My company file won't open

It’s nice to see you here in the Community, @904man.

I’d be glad provide you with the troubleshooting steps to successfully open your company file.

Before performing some troubleshooting steps, you’ll need to verify if your QuickBooks is updated to the latest release to check its compatibility.

Once verified, let’s check if the issue persists in the company file or the program itself. Let me guide you how:

  1. Press and hold the Ctrl key while double-clicking your QuickBooks icon. Note that the No Company Open window needs to pop-up before you release the Ctrl button.
  2. If it fails to open, you’ll need to check QuickBooks Desktop does not start for steps in resolving.

If the program starts, you’ll need to verify if only one computer is using your company file. To turn off hosting in other computers, here’s how:

  1. From the menu bar, click on File, and select Utilities.
  2. Select Stop hosting multi-user access.

If you’re still unable to open your company file, let’s perform this other troubleshooting steps.

  1. On the menu bar, click on File, and select Open or restore company.
  2. Select the appropriate button for the file type you want to open.
  3. Locate the company file.
  4. Click on Open to view company file.

My company file won't open

I just purchased QB for MAC 2014 and am having the same problem.  When I was in the company file, I accidentally closed the small red X so it closed the file.. When I go into QB, and I click on File and try to open a recent company, it lists the company I want to open but when I click on it, it won't open.  The File Close Company selection is "greyed" out so nothing appears to be open.  I closed the file accidentally twice with the red X and can't open either one so I created another new company, and still, the same thing.  Maybe it's a bug…  Would sure like to get rid of the screen that comes up when QB opens that talks about "what's new."  I just loaded it and am already not liking some of these selections.  I hid the tool bar because it seems annoying having this toolbar hanging out on the left when the selections are already available on the home page.

Just to add to this.. I just tried opening up the sample file and it saves "some file" and then opens up the sample company but only shows the tool bar on the left and the drop down menu across the top.  It won't let me click on anything. I tried to switch back to my new file and it won't let me access any information.  All the selections are "greyed" out.

That did not work. It goes into back up loop and the only file you can open is the one that has no information. There are many other backup files but it says they can't be opened. Thank

Try closing QB. See if it will launch and load by double clicking your company file in your documents folder.

My company file won't open

You got me I was grasping at straws. Now I would use file>close company/log off, relaunch QB the normal way and select your file from the no company open window, if it doesn't show use the browse option and navigate to the file. Report back with your results.

Okay, I did the above and it appears to be working normally now. The company file opens as it should with no crazy endless back up loops and no company data. SO I am so very grateful for all your straws:)))

What do you see when you launch QB, if you see the file menu a company file is open. The fact that QB starts a backup means a company file is open, a backup is done before opening another file. Each time you start a new company file QB will clear the resent cash. When you are done in a company file use file>close company. If and when all of your company files do not show in the no company open window use the browse option and navigate to the file. The default location is documents>quickbooks. Once all files have been opened through this process the will show in the resent file list from the no company open window.

I'm also having a problem opening a company file.  Please see attachment. Would do file rebuild if I could get it to launch but the file will not launch.

Using QB 2011 for Mac.

In your case you are opening a backup company file from an earlier version (the .qbmb format is older). There's something wrong either with that file (perhaps it is an alias and not the original file) or the location of the file (it may be on a USB key formatted for MS-DOS or something).  In the Finder, move the file into your Documents directory.  Do a File->Get Info in the Finder and make sure that the file size is at least a couple MBs (not not 4K or something).  Then drag the file onto the QuickBooks Mac icon.  Better still, find the actual file instead of this qbmb backup.  The actual file extension for 2013 is .qb2013 and is similar for earlier versions starting with 2010 (.qb2010).

Thanks Biscotti - we ended up rebuilding the file from an old backup in the end as my client needed reports for his accountant.  We've been operating off a backup file using Dropbox, backing up the file when done working in it and deleting the working file so that the backup is always the most current version.  Perhaps we are going about this wrong?  The reason we have been doing it this way is that for some reason, using the working file led to issues with conflicted files...  My client would access the file and then when they went to save it, an error message popped up saying the file was conflicted.  I could not reproduce the error myself but it happened consistently enough and the only way to avoid it was to use the backup and not the working file.

Dropbox does not allow simultaneous writes - which is what the conflicted thing is showing you.  The file has to be closed on one machine before the other machine can open it.  The backup solution you are using is a reasonable approach.

That is what I suspected - I think my client was opening it from multiple computers at their home.  In any case, we usually caught it when only 1 or 2 transactions had been entered so it was easy to fix.  Thank you for the feedback!

My 2013 won't let me open Quickbooks ever since I updated to Mac OS X.  I get a prompt to Reopen or Cancel Reopen.  Geek Squad has had it for 4 days and says the Quickbooks isn't compatible with Mac OS X.  Intuit says only 2011 or older isn't compatible.  Getting really frustrated!!!!

That should not be a problem, I can launch QB 2012 - 2014 in Mavericks. Try restarting your Mac is safe mode and see if there is a difference.

My company file won't open

QuickBooks Mac 2005 and beyond (at least) have all run on Mac OS X.  2013 is compatible with 10.9.2.  The OS version is not the issue.   What is the version of the file you are trying to open?  (What is the file extension - is it .qb2013 or something else?)   Is the file located in your documents folder on your computer? Is the file size reasonable… if you've been using QuickBooks for a while the file size is likely in the megabytes and not kilobytes.  Is the file locked (do a File->Get Info in the finder to see).  Also make sure your users has read/write permission for the file  (this is also done in Get Info in the Finder).   That is a lot of questions but I can't tell what the problem is without asking them.  However it is almost certainly something like that and not anything wrong the QuickBooks (it could be the file is hosed, that's possible, but it would be a strange thing… what version did you use prior to 2013?)
