Printing checks and printer dialog box is not opening - Help!

I'm trying to pay some bills and when I go to print checks, the printer dialog box will not open.  I've tried to use the print button, Command + P, and batch printing checks.  Nothing works.  I called for support and they sent me DIY instructions to try to rebuild data - there were no data errors.  The next step is to download the file doctor, but the link is for a windows program and I can't seem to find anything to use for Mac.  Any suggestions as to how to fix this?

This issue is only occurring for one of my companies using quickbooks desktop pro 2020 for Mac.  The app is up to date.

We can uninstall and re-install your QuickBooks Mac Desktop, shancock1.

Before doing so, please make sure to back up your company data, have your QuickBooks Desktop download file (or installation CD), and license numbers ready. Then, follow the steps to uninstall the program:

  1. Close your QuickBooks entirely.
  2. Go to Finder > Applications. Then, drag the QuickBooks icon to the trash bin.

Once done, you can follow the steps in this article to install your QuickBooks again: Install and set up QuickBooks Mac Desktop.

When the program is successfully installed, try printing the checks and check to see if the dialog box shows up.

Alternatively, you can perform the clean install if you're getting the same result. I've got this article for reference: Reinstall QuickBooks for Mac using clean install.

For more information about QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, you can use this article: QuickBooks Desktop for Mac Quick Reference Guide.

Please keep me posted on how it goes. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Thanks.

Printing checks and printer dialog box is not opening - Help!

I'm having this problem as well.  I click on the "print" button after clicking on the "preview & print" button.  The problem is that the printer dialog box does not pop up. It goes straight to a browser window.  I can print from there but the info on the check is not correctly aligned anymore.  If I uninstall QBO, will this delete all the settings/info that my bookkeeper has already entered?  This is very frustrating.  I called the help number and the person kept telling me it was a printer issue.  It's not.

I appreciate you for sharing the details with me, Matt R

I’m here to help and share with you some insights on how to get around this issue. I recommend updating your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac software. This way, we can guarantee the program is packed with the latest features and fixes. Let me guide you how.

  1. Go to the QuickBooks drop-down menu.
  2. Select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  3. If a newer version is available, select Install Update.
  4. Click Install and Relaunch when prompted
  5. When the update is complete, QuickBooks for Mac automatically opens.

You can also check this article for more details: Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.

Once done, do a print run again to double-check. If the issue persists I recommend running the Verify Rebuild tool. This tool scans your company file for issues and fixes them right away.

To learn more about the printing process in QBDT, you can refer to the Printing checks (page 230) sections in this article: QuickBooks Desktop Mac 2020 User’s Guide.

In case you run into some errors when printing in your software, you can check out the additional troubleshooting steps provided in this article: Resolve printing issues (although it's for QBDT windows, it also applies in the Mac version),

If you wish to uninstall your QBDT for Mac, you’ll want to ensure to back up your company file first to save its current settings in case you run into some errors.

However, if you're referring to QuickBooks Online Desktop App, I recommend clearing its data by to isolate the issue. you can do so by clicking the Help menu and then select Reset App Data.

Let me know if you need further assistance with printing checks in your software. It’s always my pleasure to help and get you back running your business.

Thanks.  I used Quickbooks Online and I don't see a check for updates option.

Printing checks and printer dialog box is not opening - Help!

Hi there, Matt R.

I appreciate you for coming back to provide additional information that you're using the Online version.

Updating QuickBooks to the latest release is only available for QuickBooks Desktop. With this, QuickBooks Online automatically updates the software. To isolate the printing issue that you experienced, I suggest performing basic troubleshooting steps by resetting the app data to clear the cache and refresh it into its default state.

Here's how:

  1. Click the Help menu.
  2. Click Reset App Data.
  3. Close the app when the process completed.
  4. Be sure to right-click the app and Run as Administrator when re-opening.

If the same thing happens after performing the steps above, I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the QBO application. This is to ensure you get the most recent version of the application. You can get the detailed steps in this article: QuickBooks App for Windows and Mac: General support. Please note that this will not delete all the settings/info that your bookkeeper has already entered.

Please refer to this article to see a table list that contains different features that are supported on mobile devices: Compare mobile app features.

Please know that you're always welcome to post if you have any other concerns. Wishing you and your business continued success.

Thanks.

I do NOT have a help tab. There is a little "Help" button that allows me to search for help topics.  I am using a Mac so I don't know if what you are referring to is for a PC.

If I reset the app data, does this erase all the info in my Quickbooks?

Hello @Matt R,

Thank you for sharing additional information based on the suggestion shared by my colleague above. Let me help share how clearing cache affects your data in QuickBooks Online.

Normally, clearing the app's cache is our first troubleshooting step to take once you encounter unexpected problems while using the app. Don't worry, it won't delete any of your company data only the cache it has saved on your app's storage.

Additionally, I've also included this reference for a compilation of articles you can use while working with us: What can I do with the QuickBooks App for QBO?

If you have any other questions, please let me know by leaving any comments below. I'll be here to lend a hand.
