QB Upgrade from 2008 Premier Manufacturing Version

Hi,

I need to upgrade my desktop computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10.  I currently use QB 2008 Premier Manufacturing & Wholesale version.  I do not use payroll and I only use the inventory portion of QB, not the manufacturing features.  It runs on Server 2012 and we have a single user version. If possible, I would like to move away from using Server 2012 because QB is the only thing running on it.  Here are my questions:

1. Will this version work with Windows 10?

2. If not, and I need to upgrade, which version of QB would I need?

3. Could I use another version that includes the inventory feature?

4. Is there an online version of QB for Manufacturing?

5. Would the new version work with Windows 7 temporarily?

6. I would also like to have a license and access for at least 2 people, and maybe add more as needed.

7. Will all of my QB data transfer/import into the latest version?

Please advise and thanks in advance for your help.

Re: QB Upgrade from 2008 Premier Manufacturing Version

Hi there, @SPaulsen.

Thanks for posting your concern here in the Community. Let me share some information about the system requirements in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

QBDT 2008 is already outdated, and no longer supported. To answer some of your questions, you'll need to check the system requirements compatibility to ensure that QuickBooks is compatible with your setup and will help avoid problems when you start using the program.

To check what version of QuickBooks that will fit to your business needs, you can visit this article to compare desktop products: Choose your QuickBooks Desktop product.

Then, you can check this article on how to upgrade to a new QuickBooks Desktop version

To add users license to your QuickBooks software, depending on the number of user licenses you have, QuickBooks Desktop Premier allows up to 5 users,Pro allows up to 3 users, and if you need more than 5 users, QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise Solutions allows up to 30 users working on a company file at the same time.

Lastly, you'll need to create a backup of your company file to protect against the accidental loss of your data. Right after, you'll need to restore it to your new Quickbooks to ensure that your data will transfer/import to the latest version.

If you need further assistance with the steps, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Desktop Support Team. They have additional tools to pull up your account and do a remote session.

Here's how to contact our customer support:

  1. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help from the Help menu.
  2. You can also press F1 on your keyboard to bring up the same Help Panel.
  3. In order to route you to the correct support expert, we need to know what type of question you have.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. We’ll provide you a few options. You choose which one is best for you.

Please know that you're always welcome to post if you have any other concerns related to QuickBooks. I'll be around to help. Have a good day ahead!

@SPaulsen

To answer things directly

No, QB 2008 will not install in win10, nor will it run, and intuit will not re-register it either

When you buy a new version, then the issue becomes upgrading the data file to the new version format.  To make it easy buy from intuit and have their data services step up the data file for you for free.  Other wise you need to find someone with 2011/12 installed, load your company back up file from 08, make a new back up.  Then do that again in a 2014/15 version, make a new back up and finally you can restore that back up in 2019.

number of users is no different, you buy the extra user license if you need simultaneous users, other wise the EULA allows you to install the purchased QB on two computers, but that is not a network situation.

Re: QB Upgrade from 2008 Premier Manufacturing Version

hi @SPaulsen ,

1. Will this version work with Windows 10?

>>> Some of our clients are running older QuickBooks Desktop version on Win 8.1 and Win 10 in compatibility mode. Unfortunately we also have found some technical issues in some cases. Should you have time to explore, you may try it with your current condition.

2. If not, and I need to upgrade, which version of QB would I need?

>>> Consider use the latest version (2019).

3. Could I use another version that includes the inventory feature?

>>> All desktop edition have inventory features.

4. Is there an online version of QB for Manufacturing?

>>> QBO has limited features for manufacturing. You may consider purchase the add-on to compliment it. Keep in mind, you may purchase additional tools/service to access your QuickBooks Desktop file by internet as well.

5. Would the new version work with Windows 7 temporarily?

>>> QuickBooks 2019 supports Win 7. Frankly, you have to upgrade it in due course. We have found some unresolved technical issues running Quickbooks on Win 7 in the last 12 months.

6. I would also like to have a license and access for at least 2 people, and maybe add more as needed.

>>> You may start with QuickBooks 2019 Premier edition for 2 users.

7. Will all of my QB data transfer/import into the latest version?

>>> You may ask Intuit Data Service to convert it. Another option, you may purchase a 3d party conversion service. PM me for details.

Please advise and thanks in advance for your help.

Re: QB Upgrade from 2008 Premier Manufacturing Version

After researching a little further, I am now wondering if I can "downgrade" from my 2008 Premier version to either Pro 2019 or Plus Online because they both track inventory and I am not using the other parts of Premier Manufacturing, just inventory.  My existing QB runs from Server 2012 and I am really trying to move away from using Server 2012 for maintenance reasons.  Thanks in advance.

Re: QB Upgrade from 2008 Premier Manufacturing Version

hi @SPaulsen ,

You have many options to migrate from Win Server 2012. You may host Quickbooks file on Win Server 2016 or Win 8.1/10 as well. But most of all, you have to decide first how you will prepare your currrent data migrating to QuickBooks 2019 (then to QuickBooks Online, if you still need to).
