QBSE Mileage Tracking Problem

Hello everyone,

The mileage tracking feature built-in to the QuickBooks IOS app is driving me up a wall. It lacks the ability to know when a trip begins and ends. For example, when I set out for my first Uber pickup, I get in the car, drive to the restaurant, walk into the restaurant, walk back to the car, drive to make the delivery. Sometimes that will be recorded as a whole trip. Problem is, I can't deduct the first drive to a pickup from home. There is no way I can find to edit a trip by "breaking it up" into the "personal" category for the initial non-deductible trip and the "business" category for the trip from the restaurant to the customer's house.

Sometimes the app really flakes out. I live in Orlando, and when I deliver to heavily trafficked tourists areas, I can often not move more then 25 yards in a ten minute period. The app will often interpret that to be the end of the trip. In other instances, there will be two or three trips that get lumped together. And again, there is no way I can find to edit these into three separate trips.

I tried entering manually and turning off the automatic tracker. Problem is, I can't enter personal miles that way. Also, business trips and personal errands, if they happen sequentially, get lumped together into one trip.

Is there something I'm missing here? Is there any way at all to edit trips after the fact and classify a portion as personal or business, or as two or three separate deliveries?

The app just doesn't seem to know the difference between a driver being stuck at an intersection with a short-cycling light and a trip where it takes me less than a minute to deliver the food. When that happens, the app NEVER ends the trip there.

I could go on, but I think you all get the gist. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Re: QBSE Mileage Tracking Problem

Hi TenNinetyNine,

As designed, the app will stop tracking mileage when you don't move for 10 minutes. To continue tracking, you can track the rest of the trip.

For combined personal and business trips, you can start tracking from time you travel for that particular business trip. Example: When you go to the restaurant, you don't want to start tracking from home to restaurant, but from the time you deliver the food.

I can see how useful it is when the tacking won't stop on trafficked areas and if there's a way to detect personal and business trips. I will share this idea with our product team.

Re: QBSE Mileage Tracking Problem

I think the biggest change you need to make is to allow manual entries to be changed to "personal." It is inconceivable to me why this capability has been disabled. I could live with doing just manual entry for business trips, but that comes at the cost of not being able to enter and track personal trips, which, for reasons that elude me, the IRS really wants us to track.
