QuickBooks Pro 2016 crashes when I try to open any company file, even one of the sample files that comes with the program. "Unrecoverable Error"

QB Version: QuickBooks Pro 2016, fresh install, fully updated, no previous versions ever installed.

OS: Windows 7 Pro (64-bit, fully updated OS, 4GB RAM, Intel Core i3 processor)

Problem: QuickBooks Pro 2016 crashes when I try to open any company file, even one of the sample files that comes with the program. The error message simply says "unrecoverable error" and gives an error code (I can't seem to post the error code without this forum giving me an warning about posting phone/account numbers). I have never been able to open a QuickBooks company file on this PC.

Solutions tried, without success:

  • Installation repair as described in a similar post on this site
  • Complete re-installation and update of QB
  • Booted to Safe Mode to exclude other startup programs
  • Disabled anti-virus (Microsoft Security Essentials)
  • Verified Windows Firewall exclusions (no other firewall)

Other Notes: I have the same problem on a new Windows 7 laptop with similar specs. We bought the QB Pro 3-user edition and are desperate to share our accounting workload over 3 computers. Incidentally, QB Pro 2016 has worked well on the one computer that was upgraded from QB Pro 2013 when we purchased the 2016 version.

I am at my wits end and would greatly appreciate any troubleshooting tips.

I am desperate enough to pay for remote support if it will help resolve this more quickly.

Thank you!

Jon

Hi @IntuitJonahMae ,

Success! It came down to the very last solution in that last article: Repair your Microsoft .NET Framework. I did a couple of things at once so I don't know if one or both steps fixed my Unrecoverable Error, but here's exactly what I did in case it helps someone else:

1) Uninstalled Microsoft .NET 4.6.1
2) Downloaded and re-installed .NET 4.6.1
3) Disabled Microsoft .NET 3.5.1 in "Turn Windows Features on or off"
4) Rebooted
5) Tested QuickBooks -- Success!
6) Re-enabled Microsoft .NET 3.5.1 (since it's a part of the OS)
7) Tested QuickBooks -- Success!

I'm not sure if it was the re-installation of .NET 4.6.1 or the "reset" of .NET 3.5.1 (or both) that resolved this for me, but for now it's working and I am very happy.

Thank you so much for walking me through all of these troubleshooting steps. I really appreciate it @IntuitJonahMae !

Hi JonahMae,

Thank you very much for the quick response! I followed your instructions and repaired the installation. When I started QB after the repair it (re)installed the latest update. Unfortunately when I attempt to open a company file (a sample file or our company file) I still get the same Unrecoverable Error.

What can I try next?

Thank you for your time,
Jon

Hello @Jon ,

Let's try the steps in this article :<a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com/support/articles/SLN41065">http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com...>

First, turn off your User Account Control (UAC). You've mentioned that you got the same error even when opening the sample file right? Let's try Solution 3 : Run the QuickBooks Component Repair Tool.

This article of suggestions was very helpful for the error of BRX I was getting upon opening QuickBooks 2016.

I tried repairing the .NET Framework 4.6.1 by following the steps. That did not help.

I then downloaded the QB Diagnostic Tool and that fixed my issues and I was able to open QB with no error.
