I am currently hosting 4 company files on a Windows Server 2012/R2 server running QuickBooks Database Server Manager 2019. At present the Windows Server is hosting files only. What I would like to know is if it is possible to add the capability to install and run QuickBooks Pro  Desktop 2019 on that server while maintaining its role as the Database Server manager, and how best to go about accomplishing this.

Can I just reinstall QuickBooks on server choosing to custom install with host and run options instead of just hosting option, or is there more involved.

You can install the QuickBooks Pro Desktop 2019 on your server, @silvianjim.


Once you install the Database Server Manager, you need to scan your company files. Then, you can access your company files from other computers on your network. This lets you and users work together in QuickBooks Desktop from multiple computers.


On a multi-user network, one computer hosts your company files. This is your server computer. Here's how:

  1. To start, follow the steps to download and then install QuickBooks Desktop on your server computer.
  2. Select Custom and Network install for the install type.
  3. Select I'll be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer, AND I'll be storing... if you want the full version of QuickBooks Desktop on your server computer. 
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the install.
  5. Then follow the steps to set up folder permissions on your server computer.
  6. Ensure that the user account you use to sign in to your server computer has Windows admin rights.
  7. After you install the Database Server Manager, follow the steps and use it to scan the folder holding your company files.
  8. Turn on the hosting by going to the File menu and hover over Utilities, select Host Multi-User Access. Then select Yes to confirm.

Did you even read my post??


I have been hosting company files on server for years, and have installed and updated the database manager numerous times. What I have never done is to also run the QuickBooks desktop application on that same server and this is what my current question is about. Please read, or reread, my initial post, and respond to my actual issue if you can help.

I should take my own advice and read your full post before replying. I have been getting annoyed because I seem to get only canned responses that don't answer my main question.


Assuming I can install the desktop app on the server, should I uninstall the existing database manager before doing a new custom install of both database manager and desktop app, or can install over the existing setup/


I promise to behave myself going forward.  :)

Hi there, @silvianjim.


You've come to the right place to get help with QuickBooks.


QuickBooks Database Server Manager can be run separately. You'll have to manually choose not to include it when installing QuickBooks Pro. Setting up the database server in the future won't be an issue. 


 Here's how:


  1. Close all open programs on your server computer, including QuickBooks.
  2. Open the installed file Setup_QuickBooks.exe. Then, follow the onscreen instructions. If you need to find your product or license numbers, here's how to find them.
  3. Select Custom or Network Options when asks to choose an installation type. Then, Next
  4. Choose the best option for your network setup and then select Next. Both the options install the Database Server Manager. If QuickBooks Desktop is already installed on your server computer, this won’t overwrite any existing company data.
  5. If you want Database Server Manager and QuickBooks Desktop on your server computer, select I'll be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer, AND I'll be storing... We strongly recommend this option.
  6. If you only want Database Server Manager on your server computer, select I will NOT be using QuickBooks Desktop...
  7. Click Install.

With these steps, you'll be able to keep your data server back up and running. You might also want to check your firewall and antivirus permissions to make sure you give your server manager permission to run on your server computer.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear.


Database manager is already running on server. I want to add Quickbooks Desktop, so I will be switching from "I will NOT be using QuickBooks Desktop" to "I'll be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer, AND I'll be storing".


My question is should I uninstall existing instance of Database Manager before installing again using the  "I'll be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer, AND I'll be storing" option.


I don't need instructions on the actual install. I've done it numerous times, and I will make backup of all company files/folders before proceeding. :)

You can do both for this scenario, @silvianjim.


Since you're using one computer upon the installation, you can install and run QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2019 on that server without uninstalling the Database Server Manager. However, if you encounter any errors, you can uninstall the Database Server Manager before the QuickBooks Desktop installation.


Also, it's a good thing that you create a backup of all your company before you proceed with the installation.
