Hello there, jcjust3,

An accountant's copy cannot be used to recover the company file. You can recover lost data with QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery.

ADR can help you recover your lost file by:

  • restoring lost transactions using your current Transaction Log file and a copy of your Company file.
  • restoring all but the last few hours of transactions with a copy of both your Company file and your Transaction Log file.

Check this article for the detailed steps on how to proceed: Recover lost data with QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery.

Let me know if you need anything else.

thank you for your response.  Unfortunately the directory with my company info is gone so the transaction file is gone too.  If I can't use the account copy I think I'm screwed.

Can I open the accountant copy on my own computer?  Jim

Hello, @jcjust3

I can provide you with some additional information about your company data. If you want to open the accountant copy, be sure to have the accountant version installed on your computer. Going forward, I suggest using the Intuit Data Protect service to back up your file so that it's on the cloud instead of locally on the computer. You can also set up the Intuit Data Protect to back up your files remotely once a day. Here are some of the requirements to run Intuit Data Protect:

  • Only runs on Windows computers and won't work on virtual environments or Window Parallel
  • Install Intuit Data Protect on the computer that hosts your company file.
  • The Windows user you use to set up the service will need to stay signed in.
  • The computer doesn't need to go into hibernation mode.

Should you need further information, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm only a post away. Have a splendid day!
