You can upgrade your existing desktop version to one of 3 desktop 2020 versions and usually you can do so from one of the options within the dropdown Help menu. What you are going to get is a download link to download and install the newest edition of QBDT.
If, instead, you think migrating to QBO from desktop is an Upgrade you are sorely mistaken. It is no more an upgrade than an apple is an upgrade over a grape.
Hello, jerry43.
Thanks for reaching out to the Community.
You'll need to go ahead and purchase QuickBooks Desktop 2020. Once you've purchased 2020, you can install the 2020 program on your computer with the new license and product details, then open your company file from your older version in the 2020 program. The latest version of Desktop will prompt you to upgrade the file and then do it for you once and click OK.
Below, are a few articles for you about Desktop 2020, installing, upgrading your company file, and support information if you need a hand with the process:
Also, here is an article about switching to QuickBooks Online as well: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online
If you have any more questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach back out. Have a safe and productive weekend ahead!
As additional notes, consider installing a trial license of QB 2020 and open your data file on it. If it is converted completely, you may purchase the license. Otherwise, you may have to convert to an (or some) older version than 2020.
