The only desktop you would lose would be if you are on the subscription version. If you have the stand alone it is yours forever although supportvends 3 years after introduction.
You can always go back but it is not always clean in either direction

As additional notes, make sure to refresh your QBW files every 3 year on trial license of the latest QB Desktop version.
